    Lacked unph
The one problem with this movie is lack of any real get go. To start with the alternative title is just stupid. We start with a long winded flashback of an 18th century war with everyone getting killed. An old witch lady is buried along with a set of silver dentures I never really understood why but I jnow it has something tp dp with werewolves. We get more sitting around until we get to the action. A family in a big house and son Edward gets bit. We don't really get to sea the CGI wolf till later and its not great so just implying it's there is better fhan seeing it. The plot is interesting for the most part but ultimately it lacks in anything thwt keeps it interesting.

Surprise! This is a good movie
So why do I think this is a good movie?

First, my credentials are I've been watching horror, Sci-fi, fantasy movies since I was five. That's over 70 years.

This is my first review ever written even though I have been using IMBD for a really long time I honestly was very drawn into the story and characters.

It has some surprising elements. One is how the title fits into the story.

As I watched the story unfolded and kept me interested. I liked the time period and scenery.

Yes, there were some rough scenes, but you can't have a werewolf story without big teeth and blood.

The actors were very good, though I recognized their faces, the names were not particularly familiar.

Let me know if this review is helpful, and I will write more.

Atmospheric Supernatural Horror Can't Decide What It Wants to Be
It's set in France, apparently, but the characters seem to be Anglo-Irish. The bulk of the story ostensibly takes place in the late 19th century, although technology and references to contemporaneous events correspond with anywhere from the 1790s to about 1900. Whether or not these were intentional creative choices, they give a small sense of this movie's inability or refusal to stay consistent. Is this a morality play about the sins of the town fathers being visited on their community? A supernatural detective story? A rumination on public terror and paranoia? "Yes" and also "not really" to all of the foregoing. In spite of an unsettling atmosphere and decent build-up, the movie ultimately occupies an unsatisfying middle ground in which it toys with various themes and concepts but doesn't quite commit to any of them. Creature effects are unique but also underwhelming.

For the quality of the production
This is an interesting film of a "curse" that plagues a family and village, placed by gypsies that were poorly treat by the ruling powers and family. The film has quiet contemplation of this process as the uncertainty of it all is kept hidden from the "weaker" sex, but the men don't always have the best choices in their urges. Creepy, yes, and while I enjoyed the acting and overall plot, I found this to be dull in the long run. The tension created by the production is good, but the build starts to falter as it seems to be one thing only that they are building toward. The reveal isn't any surprise as it is clear from the onset what is happening. Decent, but unsatisfying.

    The Werewolf Thing
Very cleverly and significantly similar to my favorite horror movie of all time. Different time, different place, different monster, but undeniably the vibe is there. From the intermittently placed and minimal, foreboding music to the barely perceptible low howl of the nighttime wind to the inescapable feeling of isolation and loneliness, I feel that this movie captured the essence of John Carpenter's 1981 masterpiece almost perfectly. I can't help but speculate that it would have been better without the CG and some of the modern filmmaking conventions but still a highly recommended viewing if you're a fan of The Thing. Very well directed and well acted. Easily the best werewolf movie I've ever seen.
