genethagenius - 7 May 2024 A treat for fans of Wuxia & Chinese Cinema! I grew up watching kung fu films from Shaw Bros., Golden Harvest, & Bruce Lee after Saturday morning cartoons would finish in NY. And my love for wuxia & kung fu films only increased as I got older. I was not familiar with the comic or character before this film. But I immediately became a fan! I'm not sure if I had seen Simu Liu in anything before this, but I was very impressed by his martial arts ability and performance. Awkwafina (seriously, just the name & its spelling were a turn-off initially) was the biggest surprise! You really feel & believe her character & Simu Liu's are longtime close friends. And she also did great with a wide range of wmorions & has GREAT comedic timing. The other stand out performance to me was Tony Leung Chai-Wai. I have been a fan of his films for decades. (Especially "Hero" & "2046"!). He shines here as always. Michelle Yeoh is just phenomenal no matter what she does. I've been a fan of hers since the 90's and her roles in "Tai Chi Master" w/ Jet Li and as Yim Wing Chun in the hilarious "Wing Chun". The film is great! The story is good, the characters compelling, and the fight choreography is top-notch. The only negative I have to say is the ending. The main villain/monster and some of the final act & battle were... not up to par with the rest of the film. Enjoyable, but not the best part of the film. I have one more MAJOR gripe: Shang-Chi's sister. I like her backstory. However! And Hollywood & writers keep doing this with female characters. We want to see people improve and grow. Especially in martial arts films. Training is one of the best parts outside fight scenes in martial arts films. So we come to the character of Xu Xialing played by the excellent Meng'er Zhang. So... she learned martial arts from spying, (okay I'm still on board) and then taught & trained herself (with no instructors or training partners) to such a high degree that she easily beats skilled martial artists & MMA fighters? Let alone her brother, who was PERSONALLY trained by their father. See the problems? And this is prevalent across media right now with female characters. Please don't see this as a misogynistic rant. I just see this as becoming alarmingly common. Characters who are already good at everything and "just need to realize it" are kind of boring. Where's the struggle? But overall, I greatly enjoyed this film. If you like martial arts films, wuxia, or just MCU films in general, you can't go wrong with "Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings". I really hope Disney greenlights a sequel. It deserves one.
LukeCustomer2 - 21 December 2023 I was hesitant to see this... but I was wrong. Very good movie. I am not a fan of Kung Fu so I didn't really want to see this but 2 years after it came out... I watched and glad I did. Marvel was silly to have this movie come out and then do nothing with it. Shang-Chi spent his life being trained to be a killer by his very scary dad but ran away when he was 15 and has been living the down low life for 10 years with his friend Katy in the USA. Loved their relationship. Katy is the one who leads in the USA but one day dad's goons come looking for Shang-Chi (Shaun in the USA) and Katy finds out her goofball friend has a lot he hasn't shared. But still she is a supportive friend who actually goes with him to face what must be done. There was one section of the movie that I wish was cut out completely - looking at you Ben Kingsley - but the goodwill from the first half of the movie overcomes the rest. Recommended. If Marvel was smart they would Shang-Chi 2 into production.
cemozdogan - 7 August 2023 Film filled with absurdity "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is a film filled with absurdity, but it also contains some entertaining scenes. The animation quality might not match other Marvel movies, but the scarcity of unnecessary and comedic jokes stands out as a positive aspect. Character development, fragmented segments in the screenplay, and weak editing prevent the film from reaching its full potential, leaving it at a mediocre level. However, it serves as a light-hearted option suitable for the whole family, offering a pleasant viewing experience. With action-packed scenes and a fresh addition to the Marvel universe through its new character, Shang-Chi captivates the audience. It can be enjoyed while sitting comfortably in your seat, accompanied by a warm cup of tea or coffee. Despite some flaws, Shang-Chi delivers an enjoyable superhero adventure to the viewers.
ayushparasar - 19 November 2022 Good visuals, ordinary story, weak characters Watched this in two parts.
I'll talk about the climax first - it feels absolutely weak. The action is underwhelming for most parts, except when the rings come into play. But you get a feeling that, for creatures so ancient and the rings so powerful, the whole sequence doesn't appear very serious.
It might also be attributed to the fact that I didn't watch the whole film in one go.
That said, Shang-Chi starts off brilliantly and feels like you're in for a magical ride with mythical rings and ancient powers. It then subtly shifts narrative to the protagonist life in a city. The bus sequence is just amazing! The first 40-45 minutes are great.
But as whole the film doesn't leave you wanting more, either from the hero or from the rings. Maybe an origin story about the rings would seem interesting.
No wonder it didn't occur to me to complete the other half of the film for over one month!
ItsJustSlater - 4 October 2022 Not bad, not great As a standalone it isn't a bad movie but it certainly didn't feel like there was any Marvel tie-in beyond the cameo of Wong and Trevor. Which felt forced and only there so they could call it a Marvel movie.
I get the feeling it wasn't made for American audiences, which isn't surprising considering China is a huge market that everyone wants a piece of. But it doesn't detract from the movie.
Overall, I'm not disappointed I watched it but I don't feel the need to ever see it again. Most Marvel movies from Endgame and before, minus Iron Man 3, I've happy watched several times so it doesn't stand up to those but it's okay.
