If you are gonna go to deal with something, best be ready!
Kevin Costner likes these rough films. This felt a lot like Open Range, except this time, Costner's character went in ill prepared, when he knew better. That part didn't make any sense. But decent people standing up to evil makes a lot of sense, and they did that, though not in a cohesive fashion, so the loss equaled the triumph. That made this sad.

Based on a book, this screenplay might be leaving out some of the development factors, but it feels like some parts in the logic have been left out. The most unbelievable part is that a 30-year lawman, would not utilize the law better, like bringing in federal authorities and moving around the corrupt local yokels.

It as well acted, well shot and edited, and the music was pretty much perfect, which is rare in recent years as many overuse music and make it a constant drone. I just wish they spent more time strengthening the script so that it was more believable.

    Disappointing
This is a great story, married couple in love, have child, child is loved. Father dies, mother remarries. Step father is abusive. Step fathers family are violent. Biological fathers parents (kids grandparents) want child, to give him a good upbringing.

It should, be full off suspense, it should be a thriller, it should be tense. That's where it fails.

What could be a great suspense thriller. Is actually boring.

It's disappointing. It's not convincing, It's flat. The acting is poor. Very poor.

What could have been a great, on the edge of you seat film. Is so disappointing, I fail to see why they made it.

    John Dutton in the 60's
Kevin Costner doesn't stray far from his John Dutton character in 'Yellowstone'. He lives in Montana, they own horses (or did), mannerisms are the same, along with his wise old man quips, and he's got that violent tenacity that gets unleased in order to protect what is his, mainly family.

Diane Lane's character could easily be a Dutton herself. She's relentless and doesn't know when to say no, even when she probably should. Lane is outstanding in her role.

This movie is dark, no doubt about it. It's tough to watch at times, especially when you know all the conflict revolves around a three year old boy. The antagonist family is evil. The sad thing is, there are families like this everywhere, not all to this extent, but there's a lot of evil out there, and sometimes the good guys can't back down and it may require playing dirty. That's real life.

    The Things We Lose
It's a haunting film. It could be summed up by what George wryly says: "sometimes that's all life is, Margaret. A list of what we've lost."

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are reunited in this drama about the values that we hold dear and the forces that are unleashed to frustrate us. And at what cost.

Costner and Lane are really good together on screen as a couple. Their acting oozes with authenticity. They are a loving couple that have gone through rough times but are the stronger for it. This quality shines on screen.

Lesley Manville (Blanche Weboy) as the villainess acts the part of an earthy and wizened matriarch well.

The outdoors of the west are simply amazing. The camera work takes advantage of nature's grandeur.

Should we condone what happens in the end? I'm no moralist but my heart bleeds for George and Margaret.

It's great if quiet drama. The reminder of George about life's definition rings true. Watch it, and let the film speak to you in a personal way.

    GREAT MOVIE!
Very interesting and exciting!! The title of the movie and the poster are somewhat confusing, as if it were a boring love story.

It is a totally different and another kind of very strong love story.

Costner and Lane both fantastic in the countryside village town with sheriff, both perfect for this environment.

I would have given it a ten, but without commenting on the story, the ending didn't seem reasonable to me. Still loved the movie.

Very surprised with the low rating.
