    Loved it!
I enjoyed this movie immensely! But do know that I am not a man of faith. I am not a christian but I do know that like any superstition, it obviously has its part to play in professional sports. Now know this... I love baseball! I love stories where the underdog or the less fortunate player finds the strength to overcome! Remember Jim Abbott? What a pitcher and what a story! Hill only played 4 season's in the minors, but he not only proved to himself and others that he and that bat were one, but he inspired so many that they should follow their dreams. Maybe this movie will inspire? I sure hope so.

    A bit slurpy but
Perhaps the dialog does get a bit corny the movie carries a meaningful message that we all need to be reminded. Contrary to what some say was amateur acting, I feel the cast, although restricted somewhat by some corny dialog portrayed the characters well.

In summation, don't take every scene as "factual"........and don't accept the entire story as "fact". Not to spoil the movie for others but if so inclined, do a little research to obtain the actual facts regarding Ricky Hill, his medical condition and his eventual "major league " baseball career. Not quite as the movie portrays.

Since this review forum indicates my review is too short and needs more characters, I will say I enjoyed the seemingly genuine scenes of the ramshackle houses and cars. Being that I am a classic car lover, I found it enjoyable seeing cars in the movie that were far from restored but rather, in a condition that very well could have been expected for a poor area of Texas in the late '50's, early '60's.

If this isn't enough characters, well then, I guess I just wasted my time in typing as much as I have.

Authentic portrayal of the many families of the era
Having grown up in the 60's among many poor families from the American south, I can confidently say that this movie captured the real feel of many from that era.

The portrayal of the father by Dennis Quaid was very realistic and moving. As hard as it may seem to many today, I personally knew kind yet stern men who were much like this father, who took his role seriously to a fault.

In their passion to protect their children from the many corrupting influences in their day, they tended to overprotect them. Over time many softened their approach. Now we have sadly come to a time when some fathers have become afraid to say no to their kids.

Watch this movie if you want a glimpse of this aspect of real American life.
