pbscy - 6 May 2024 This had decent larger plot line and maintained historical accuracy, but failed miserably on multiple fronts While the larger plot line was decent, they had multiple plots throughout the movie that seemed like it was irrelevant. They spent over half the movie creating a father son relationship and just when the son was about to become a larger part of things they killed him off in probably the stupidest way possible. It felt like the entire first half of the movie was suddenly a waste of time.
I have enjoyed the previous franchise movies and found them very entertaining... this was dry and stiff. The acting was decent, but storylines was a massive downfall.
I don't even know where the protagonist even came from, what his back ground was, or anything the like. I only know I was supposed to just accept it.
cardodavid - 30 January 2024 Good movie for the fans except the ending This is not a deep movie, but nor the franchise, but although that it has a great scenery, and a great background and we can "photography".
"The King's Man" is a prequel to the "Kingsman" spy action series, taking us back to the origins of the organization during World War I.
Strengths:
Visually Stunning Action Sequences: The film boasts some truly impressive action sequences.
Historical Setting: The World War I backdrop adds a layer of intrigue and realism to the story. The film doesn't shy away from the horrors of the war, and it uses the historical context to explore themes of pacifism, war profiteering, and the manipulative nature of power.
Weaknesses:
Inconsistent tone: The film constantly shifts between being a serious historical drama and a lighthearted spy thriller. This tonal inconsistency can be jarring, and it prevents the film from truly excelling in either genre.
If they have kept the serious tone it probably could become a really great movie.
In this same route, although the music is high quality, it doesn't match that serious tone.
emedberry - 28 August 2023 This does my heart some good Every facet of this movie is exquisitely honed in true craftsman style. Not polished, but rough-hewn and deeply lovable.
That is really the essence of my considered opinion, but since I must add more characters to qualify, I suppose I must prattle on.
There is a kind of "style and class" that doesn't attempt to be either.
Normally, I can pick off the things that I don't like about a film right away.
In my own quirky opinion, this film reminds me of what one journalist wrote about Dame Margot Fonteyn: "like honey coiling out of a jar"
As a side note, my goodness, doesn't Ralph Fiennes age well? And that subtlety and shifting expression-so very English. Dry wit never lost, thank goodness.
yedolix - 12 December 2022 This project was doomed to fail. Shame, because it's not half bad. The first two installations in the Kingsman franchise achieved their fame by being what their British protagonists might call cheeky. There's a lot of fun to be had in watching the banter and mismatch between the Kingsman agency's stuffy and pompous operatives and the main character, Eggsy, who is a new recruit from a more humble background who is certainly not just another James-Bond archetype. The films were also known for their slightly adult humor.
Watching the promotions for this movie, it seemed clear that the makers are taking a more serious approach and leaving out the over-the-top silliness that defined the previous two movies. This being a rejection of what made Kingsman unique in the first place, it was probably inevitable that this movie would underperform at the box office.
But upon watching the movie, this unavoidable flop may honestly be unearned. First of all, the movie hasn't completely discarded the soul of the franchise. There's still fun. Yes, the main characters are a father and son who spend much of the movie brooding over the death of the family matron, which is a bit of a downer. They also do this in the most high-class, unlively and unemotional way possible which makes it worse. But beyond that, the very premise of the movie, a wild and liberal rewriting of real WWI events, is already kind of naughty, to those who know what really happened. And there's definitely some colorful and larger than life characters to adorn the screen and a few visual gags. The movie even preserves the original's balance of gratuitous violence in good taste.
Additionally, the camera work and editing are very well done, especially during the fight scenes which are expertly choreographed, the movie is able to subvert viewer expectations on two occasions (one of which is shocking, the other slightly underwhelming), and the acting is consistently good and authentic.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a movie for the hall of fame. There are flaws, like the main villain lacking any real character or several of the plot points being cliche, especially in the first few minutes. But the Kingsman movies were never made to win Oscars, they were made to give you a good time, and this one does the job even if it is a bit more serious.
Worth a watch.
Fluke_Skywalker - 5 November 2022 Heavy is the head that wears the crown For lengthy swathes of its 2 hr. Runtime, The King's Man eschews the absurd-- but fun--tone of its predecessors in favor of a sour, naval gazing one. Its themes are heavy handed. Its spirit bleak. It's really not until the third act that it shakes off its wet coat and starts to have a little fun. Is it enough to save it? Kinda. It never really takes full flight, but it at least sticks the landing enough to reward your patience.
The cast is uniformly excellent, lead by the always dependable Ralph Fiennes. Who makes for a surprisingly good action hero. Said action is hyper-stylized, but remains surprisingly tactile. The overall story is also good. It's just a shame that writer-director Matthew Vaughn chose to blot out these sunny aspects with far too many clouds.
neilor-1 - 8 October 2022 Not worth watching The third Kingsman is not like it's predecessors. No humor, no fun and a series of boring fights. The plot is childish, the attempt to include historical persons is a total failure.
Besides the absurdity of changing the real historical events with ridiculous imitations, the film is political absurdity. In WWI the Germans were bad and the Britons were good?! Come on!
The explanation why USA were waiting too long to enter the war... This was the only laughable moment in the film. Not to mention that the images of real historical figures were so distant from their real faces that I was guessing who is who by the context, not the face.
At the end - a mixture of immature story, decent visual effects and a pinch of propaganda - this is The King's Man.
