Getting to the point of diminishing returns
While there are still a decent number of laughs and clever references, this franchise is starting to run out of gas. The first Minions movie and Despicable Me 3 were already showing some signs of franchise fatigue and Rise of Gru further exemplifies this. It's not the worst animated film out there, but it just isn't too outstanding.

The plot is fine and has some decent lessons. The voice cast is pretty stacked as well. However, they are all a bit buried in their weird characters. The 70s time period provides some fun entertainment, but it's all a bit surface level. The Rise of Gru is perfectly adequate, but that is a bit of a step down for this franchise.
