antheaps - 3 May 2024 Strange acting by Nicole Kidman I had to turn it off half way through the movie. I just couldn't understand how a gifted comedian that was able to make millions of people laugh through her natural ability to use expression and make fun of herself, could be so intensely wooden, serious, sarcastic and nasty all the time in real life when she was being sexy. She appeared to be little more than a shewd business woman. No doubt Lucy had these sides to her personality and so much more, but they were overdone, perhaps because it suited the type of acting Nicole Kidman does best. The side of Lucy people relate to and love is completely missing from the movie. That seamed too strange and made it very difficult for me to relate the character Nicole Kidman played to Lucielle Ball. Even when she was imagining the comedy scenes in her head, Kidman didn't even crack a smile but held an emotionally wooden serious face at all times. Very weird.
agnes_soos - 20 May 2023 Mixed feelings about the storyline, but great acting For someone who is a big fan of I Love Lucy this movie leaves me with mixed feelings. The storyline is a bit confusing and made me wonder what it actually is meant to say. There are so many mixed messages. As for Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem I think they did an excellent job playing the role. It's probably the hardest acting as both Lucy and Desi had such unique characters in their show, but the mimics, gestures and Lucy's so special tone of voice were well refleced in this movie. Nicole Kidman even holds the cigarette like Lucy and does that finger thing Lucy always did when she played nervous, which shows their attention to detail.
mickeythechamp - 9 October 2022 the world against an actess I surprisingly liked this movie. Probably more than I should. It is a classic biopic with good preformances throughout. I think I just like movies about creatives. They always talk to me on a personal level.
I will be honest here. I Didn't watch I love Lucy, don't know much about Lucille Ball or her life. So if you are a person looking for a acurete or critical real world view and review it won't be from me.
We follow Lucille Ball the star of I love Lucy. She is confronted with the accusation of being a Communist and finding out if her husband cheated on her. It is a fight for her job and her carrier.
All the preformances are great in this film. Especially Nicole Kidman beings so much charm and life to her charecter and Javier Bardem as Desi Amaz is utterly charming.
The plot explores Lucille's life both before and in her fame and gives the charecter a progressive and innovative charm. You understand why she was so popular and where all her successes and faliures come from.
The idea of showing the chatecter at her lowest is a great drama maker and you really want everything to work out for her.
The movie also has it's low points. There are some way to written speaches and I could imagine it wouldn't feel great for people that know Ball's story. It glamorises her a bit and she can seem like a perfect charecter that is always right. This is where the film falls into the normal biopic tropes which is a shame.
Overall I liked and recormend the movie. It's charming with great preformances and overall a decent time.
christophersarles - 6 August 2022 Nominated for WHAT? So tired of things being nominated not for content but for cast and topic.. This movie was TERRIBLE.
The casting was horrific. Kidman not bothering to hide her accent, and the Ricky character looked like Ricky's drunk homeless grandfather.
Couldn't pay attention to whatever the plot was because of nicole kidmans plastic surgery disasters..
Go watch the documentary. Lucy and desi also on prime .
oaromaniuk-25940 - 3 May 2022 Stunt casting can be harder to escape then communism claim The premise for this movie, a week filming an episode of I love Lucy, while Lucy & Desi navigate a communism claim, the first possible television pregnancy in history, and marriage complications is entertaining with flashes of history and classic episodes bits to entertain Lucy fans and create intrigue for those who haven't been introduced to the world of I Love Lucy beforehand, but unlike other movies where actresses so embody Lucy, you always know it's Nicole Kidman speaking in a voice closer resembling Elizabeth Holmes then Lucy, jk Simmons and Alia shawkat are the standouts for me, but each cast member has honestly been played better by someone in a lesser film, Debra messing still having done one of the best Lucy's Even if it was only for a bit in will & grace. If you don't know the world of desilu and I love Lucy, this movie should have no issue for you, but if you do, it's really hard to see past the stunt casting of really famous, popular actors that just don't have the magic chemistry that the original people did and Nicole may understand the choreography but the spark is still missing in the grapes and at the dinner table.
