Christina Ricci is one of THE queens of dark fantasy
Throughout much of the '90s, Christina Ricci was known as the queen of arthouse cinema, appearing in the likes of "The Ice Storm" and "The Opposite of Sex". But she's also been the queen of productions that have a dark or even morbid element. She played Wednesday in the '90s Addams Family movies, and co-starred on the miniseries "Wednesday" last year.

So, we have here another dark movie in which Ricci starred. Chris Sivertson's "Monstrous" casts her as a 1950s mom who moves to an isolated house with her son, but all is not what it seems.

As a previous reviewer noted, this isn't really a horror flick, but more of a psychological drama with horrific elements. With that in mind, everything about it is done to a tee. It's the sort of movie that you'd get if Todd Haynes made a thriller. I recommend it.

Among the co-stars are Colleen Camp (one of the Playboy bunnies in "Apocalypse Now") and Nick Vallelonga (son of the man played by Viggo Mortensen in "Green Book").

    Waste of times
This movie was about a mom and her son move far away from her ex husband because her husband do something to her and her son,At their new house something happening during the night. That's was basically it.

This was a very slow pace cliche movie, with illogical plot twist and not scary at all, also got no explanation from alot of things, what was her ex husband do to them and the monster itself and more. What a waste of times.

This is not really a horror movie, but a stupid drama with alot of unnecessary scene.

I dont really mind watching a cliche movie, as long as it is has a good execution to deliver the story, but this movie was end with an ending, which doesn't make sense to the story.

    Not Horror but Fantasy/Psychological Drama
They did this film a huge disservice by marketing it as horror. There is nothing in the fim that is remotely horror. There is a supernatural element but supernatural does not equal horror. If it had been marketed as fantasy or psychological drama an entirely different audience would view it. I believe that it would have much better reviews.

Cristina Ricci, as Laura, does a superb job portraying the many different emotions that one experiences when enduring the circumstance that is the theme of the film. The scenery is well done using upbeat 1950's music and bright colors to depict how Laura views the world.

    Bring tissues.

Films as predictable as this will make Ricci a has been
Within 5 minutes of the film starting I turned to my husband and said 'is this going to just be another one of those films where the child doesn't actually exist'. Sadly I was right. Why do film makers just keep recycling the same storylines? Any good actor will read a script and decide if it is worthwhile to play the part, so why did Ricci accept this? Is she so desperate for a part that she couldn't hold out for a storyline where people cannot see within minutes of the film starting where it is heading. She actually does a good job but no amount of good acting can justify having to sit and say 'I saw that coming'. It's not a thriller, it's not a horror, it's a drama. Not labelling it as a drama means you have more people criticise it when they probably watched it more for the entertainment factor of which this has none. So if you want to watch a depressing drama, then this is the film for you.

    Oh well
Really bad movie but at least the soundtrack, costumes and decor were nice. Not a drop of scary in this movie, more slow and boring than anything. Different style of cast for once. I appreciated the vacation from the same nonsense, they keep making. Kid actors used to be so great, wonder what happened? Now it's like they pick a random kid from a school and throw them in a movie.
