axlrolls - 26 May 2024 Marvelised, poorly executed, nostalgia The success of this movie is genuinely perplexing to me. It has a Chris Pratt esque lead who can't stop telling bad jokes, the cgi is shocking in places, the entire film is completely sharp and in focus to the point where it feels like a computer game. And why aren't we allowed to have one serious moment? Genuinely sad events are interrupted by cheesy quips because 'that's what we do in film now'. The acting is largely poor, except for hugh grant, but to be fair the script is so clunky I feel bad for the actors.
This is the same as so many remakes, reboots and other bits of franchise content. Collecting a load of familiar references and call backs to other things doesn't make a film.
ThisisFizban - 12 March 2024 Expectations I think most people going into the theater had low or no expectations going into this movie because a dungeons and dragons movie hasn't come out in years and the previous one is laughably bad. I just saw it in March of 2024 and I'd heard many good things about it. I used to play D&D as a teenager so it is nostalgic for me. I really have no problem with a D&D movie being a comedy since that's how me and my friends played it. But I think if you're going to play it off as a Dungeons and Dragons comedy you should at least establish it as a real quest with modern day characters. It doesn't have to be that way but it would've improved the jokes they were trying to make in the movie.
But they wanted to go with a regular fantasy comedy, that's fine. They could've taken the Dungeons and Dragons name off of it and no one would've noticed. The movie had it's good points. It didn't really get good for me until the last 45 minutes. But in general there was too much reliance on loud crazy action scenes that were just spectacle. I felt no suspense that the characters were in danger. It was ok but nothing too memorable. Except for Jarnathan. He was pretty epic.
sonofliberty-602-584203 - 1 February 2024 Dice rock'n'roll! As an adventure film for a mass audience - it's normal, as a film adaptation for fans of DnD - it's almost a masterpiece!
The spirit of universe of the dice game with obvious and not so obvious references is perfectly conveyed - although, if you're not familar with it, before watching this film, you should probably familiarize yourself with at least the first Baldur's Gate game, at least in the story mode.
The staging of the combat fights is filigree, comedic outlets are fun and the conclusion of the entire grief story carries a clear message.
Grant's character, who has problems with women but none with children, is a little clouded. Rodriguez could build MOAR muscle. The shy love line of youth is a little embarrassing. Fast travel around the world could have been done a little longer, not as a couple of frames stitched together. They could have spent more on animal animation... But - this is not so unnecessary nitpicking!
In sequel they should do less fairy-tale chases in the light of a day and add more darker dungeons - to spend 100 million and not fail in the eyes of the corporations. But even without it, this is by far the best adaptation of the famous board game for the screen!
