salustiopaulo - 8 May 2024 Underwhelming There were fun moments throughout the story and the idea had great potential, but ended up being unapologetically formulaic and generic. Most of the characters presented have no depth whatsoever and end up taking the role of stereotypical props to narrate the plot or to be a comic relief.
Despite having a visually appealing animation, it's plot falls incredibly flat and shallow - with a narrative that explains itself too often and a predictable, unsatisfactory, anticlimactic conclusion. I understand it's a movie targeted to a younger audience, but still, that doesn't justify the fact that it's recycled and has dissapointing writing and storytelling.
It cannot be compared to the studio's classics in multiple standards.
jennalfclark - 9 March 2024 Great movie for the family! This was a fun one to watch with the kids. The animation style was bright and engaging, and the voice acting was fantastic. (I am, admittedly, a huge sucker for anything Toni Collette does!)
My 7yo thought it was the "best ever" and the 4yo said it was "pretty good." Mom and Dad found it enjoyable and even touching at times. It's a coming of age movie, so the messages aren't unique, but it was a cute iteration of this type of story. The writing was good and the pacing worked well, so it kept everyone interested. I would recommend it for any family movie night, especially for anyone with young kids.
mhuseman-20255 - 24 October 2023 Entertaining & Enjoyable I really enjoyed this DreamWorks film. It's based on the Krakens which are legendary sea monsters. (I don't understand the reviews comparing this movie to another). A teenager, whose mother did not inform her of her roots, discovers she is a "sea monster." She knew she was different and discovers her destiny accidentally. The movie does not have any slow or boring parts - it's action-filled with some adult humor. The only thing I thought was unnecessary in an animated movie targeted to kid audiences is that one of the characters goes to prom with same sex date. This was just a small part. I think we - especially children - should be able to watch a family movie and just enjoy it. People read too much into unnecessary content. Ruby Gilman Teenage Kraken is a very cute & entertaining movie!
