Wow. A classic. Thoughtful and powerful story with exactly right effects
Having seen all the Godzilla movies this is by far the most well written, thoughtful best version. There's both an intimacy of story and an epic scale of dread as Godzilla stomps through post-war Tokyo.

It's actually an anti-war movie and a movie of forgiveness. It's pretty damn good. The acting is amazing, the special effects are crisp and well executed. The updated version of Godzilla is great. It's not some 1000 foot high mega beast, but a " realistic" 60 foot size animal that isn't out of the realm of possibility given other ancient creatures from Earth's past?

A must see. A gem. And worth it.

    Moving, Powerful, And Thrilling
In the aftermath of Japan's unique World War Two trauma, the national government talked about the country being back in 'Year Zero'. It meant many things, and many other people are better placed than me to unpack those. But that fact alone sheds illuminating light on Godzilla Minus One, a film that has deservedly won praise as one of the very best of its type. It takes Godzilla back to what it was meant to be in the first place - a way for Japan to talk about that trauma. In this film, Godzilla takes Japan back before Year Zero, almost as if offering the traumatised and guilt-laden survivors of the war to do it all again, but this time with selflessness and service. It's a beautifully shot film, with excellence in pretty much every department; not least the score and the simply brilliant visual effects. There more than a couple of moments that are deeply moving, and also a handful of occasions where sound is cut completely, to powerful effect. This is a special film, to be cherished and enjoyed and revisited.

Outstanding film with a 15 million budget
I am still blown away that this film had a budget of 15 million dollars. The visuals of Godzilla look like something from a 70 million dollar budget film. Its a slap to the face to Disney whose 200 million budget films lack good CGI, scratch that acceptable CGI.

What makes this film truly special though is how its main focus is the human characters, not Godzilla. Godzilla feels like a side character almost in his own film for the amount of screen time the lizard is shown in. This is great though because the human characters are amazing, the main character especially, you forget that this is a Godzilla film with how emotional the human scenes are.

This film absolutely deserved an Oscar win.

This is a great film 9/10
This movie has so many fantastic components! Some of the essential components in this film that I thought were amazing were: the standout performances from the lead characters, the suspense, the story, pacing, and the climax.

To start, the actors did a great job and gave life to a seemingly lifeless movie franchise. I felt the weight of every sentence they spoke, it was a stellar performance from the main character in particular.

The ability to create suspense is unmatched, this monster movie felt like a suspense movie more than an action movie (which is a good thing). This Godzilla is truly sinister. Even though this is a low budget film, the effects look good enough.

I loved the entire plot, the pay offs from the good storytelling really showed. The concept of minus one was a really depressing concept, and I loved every second we spent in this alternate reality. The story about a kamikaze pilot not wanting to sacrifice himself paired with the character progression from the opening sequence is bone-chilling.

The pacing also felt really great, the longer run time on a monster movie is usually a bad thing. But, most of these monster movies are all about the monster and the characters are personality-less meat bags that I want to see die. The characters were interesting and made up for all of the time we didn't get to spend with Godzilla.

I don't want to spoil the ending so all I am going to say is that it is nearly perfect, and that all of the story gets tied up in a nice bow.

My only complaints are: the low visual effect budget and the unrealistic ending with one of the main characters being alive after all. But, I can't really complain because it makes the ending even better (but it is a little unrealistic).

    Great movie, go see it!

THIS is what a Godzilla film should be!
So the film was apparently actually called "Godzilla - 1.0" in Japanese as in "Godzilla One Point O," and the reason for that title is made abundantly clear in the last scene of the film. However, the people who translate these films are probably not paid enough so "Godzilla Minus One" is the stupid translation that we got. Oh, well.

The movie itself, however, is great. The effects are great; the carnage and wanton destruction that Godzilla is known for are definitely there. Godzilla stomps, eats and power breath nukes his way through Japan in one of the best action Sci Fi Godzilla films that has been made since the original. Oh, and it's also a romantic film. Trust me. Watch it. You'll see.
