Wicked Little Letters

Wicked Little Letters

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark and absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, the film follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding. When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women - led by Police Officer Gladys Moss - begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

Ridiculous casting mars otherwise good film
This "based on a true story" film is set in early 20th Century England. But in their infinite wisdom, the filmmakers decided to impose early 21st Century mores with casting that is as out of place for 20th Century England as if Mr. Spock were there. This varies between distracting & annoying, but by any measure detracts from what we're seeing onscreen.

On the plus side, Jessie Buckley's performance is the show - really a lot of fun seeing her chew the scenery. Olivia Colman is good too as the repressed Edith, but it's generally a far less flashy role.

And, for the most part, the events of the movie are true, with minimal screenwriter embellishment.

    NOT a comedy
Despite the marketing, Little Wicked Letters is far from being a comedy. It is a light-weight crime/psycho drama a few notches above any "Murder She Wrote" episode. The movie is actually very good--well acted and directed, but not a comedy. It revolves around the spinster, Edith, and her suffocating home life with her mother and her tyrant of a father...AND...how she copes with her situation. But above all, this movie is marketed as a comedy--check out the poster and the trailers--but you will find yourself searching for something to laugh about, as you can actually feel the weight of Edith's desperation pressing upon you. Good movie--just not a comedy.

Well... At least I learned a few new curse words
Gotta give it to the British, they know how to curse.. And so does the Irish apparently. As for the movie itself.. It's supposed to be based on a true story but I doubt it was. Real life doesn't work like that and it never has. The acting was decent for the most part but the story was really not that interesting. And it's supposed to be a comedy but I didn't laugh a single time.. They should have spent a little more time writing jokes because none of them landed and the physical comedy was sorely lacking. It seemed like a lazy production to me.

Probably the weakest British comedy I have seen in my life if I'm being honest.
