emilyjonesbusiness - 13 February 2023 Meh It would have been a good movie but it is Majorly flawed. And felt like the writers only briefly read Romeo and Juliet and didn't really pay any mind to the characters at all. Hardly any of it actually went along with Romeo and Juliet timeline or events. It felt like all they did was use the names and briefly use some of the storyline in it. This movie would have been good had they just made it something else and not used a classic. It was very loosely used from the story. But did not make any sense to the plot of Romeo and Juliet if they wanted to explain Roseline's side they should have actually read up on the characters..
ivantheeditor - 9 December 2022 Cheesy but still watchable Obviously this movie was meant for teenagers and young adults. I'm a 36yo dude. So take what I say with a grain of salt because clearly I'm not the intended target audience of this and I know that. This was actually well done, the acting was pretty good, the story was ok, and it just looks beautiful with all the costumers and castle-like building of old Italy times. It had a few good laughs in it too. But it's also incredibly predictable even though it didn't have to be. Some of the decisions felt very forced and made no sense because clearly that's what they needed the character to do in order to serve the main plot. Anyway, it's a cute forgettable movie that you might actually enjoy a lot if you're a 14year old girl bored out of her mind.
trinaboice - 28 October 2022 Clever and cute IN A NUTSHELL:
"Rosaline" is a comedic twist on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" in which the classic love story is told from the perspective of Juliet's cousin Rosaline (Kaitlyn Dever), who just happens to be Romeo's recent ex-girlfriend. Crushed when Romeo (Kyle Allen) dumps her after meeting Juliet (Isabela Merced), sharp but idealistic Rosaline schemes to foil the famous romance and win back her guy.
The romantic comedy was directed by Karen Maine. The writing was done by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber.
THINGS I LIKED:
Kaitlyn Dever is a delightful revelation as Romeo's ex-girlfriend. It's fun to imagine her and her life since Shakespeare doesn't tell us much about her.
Romeo is played by Kyle Allen and reminds me a little bit of a young Keith Ledger.
I adore all of these cast members in anything they do: Bradley Whitford, Isabela Merced, Minnie Driver, and Christopher McDonald.
The movie has been in development since 2010! Several Hollywood A-listers were slated to play various roles but backed out for a number of timing issues.
The witty and modern dialogue is amusing. I never quite laughed out loud but was giggling inside.
Fun soundtrack with entertaining choices.
Gorgeous set design and costumes.
Beautiful cinematography as we get to visit Verona, Italy.
Shout-out to registered nurses! My twin sister is a Nurse Practitioner. I teach at a nursing college! Yay nurses! Minnie Driver's character was sweet and entertaining with her dry comments about being a nurse.
I thought the running gag about the girls' earrings getting stuck in each other's hair was cute, but there was also an important reveal during one of those moments. The last time they hugged, they missed the gag.
THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
It seems odd to have so many American accents mixed with British ones.
It seemed like a missed opportunity to add some fun twists.
Some pretty cliched dialogue.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
Some profanity, including one F-bomb.
Subtitles when French is spoken.
One of the characters is a gay cross-dresser.
We see a shirtless man...with 6-pack abs...not that I'm complaining...
THEMES:
Love and romance
Truth
Betrayal
Jealousy
Hope
Friendship

rogerflores-41611 - 18 October 2022 A snarky, modern re-write makes this enjoyable For loyalists of the original Shakespeare drama, this is pure blasphemous fun. And, if you are a fan of Anna Kendrick's early snarky work, Rosaline will win you over early and keep you watching. This modern re-telling of Romeo and Juliet doesn't waste time trying to speak in the vernacular of Shakespeare, which is a relief. Instead, it focuses on a classic theme: the guilded caged princess who must marry against her wishes. But this caged bird is snarky-- and yet, she must grow as a person (and character) to overcome some of her jaded disposition in order to find her one true love. This movie isn't a classic and won't win any awards, but it is totally watchable and has a satisfying conclusion.
