The Munsters

Lily is a typical 150-year-old lovelorn vampire who's looking for the man of her nightmares -- until she lays her eyes on Herman, a 7-foot-tall green experiment with a heart of gold. It's love at first shock as these two ghouls fall fangs over feet for each other in a Transylvanian romance. Unfortunately, it's not all smooth sailing in the cemetery as Lily's father has other plans for his beloved daughter's future, and they don't involve her new bumbling beau.

    A Sweet Halloween Treat...
Personally, I went into this movie expecting it to be terrible. I grew up watching THE MUNSTERS, and just couldn't picture a modern update. I like several of Director Rob Zombie's other films, but this is a vastly different sort of movie for him. Plus, it had already been panned as a "bomb" by critics.

Well, upon having watched it, it was not that bad at all. Was it silly? Absurd? Goofy? Yes, but so was the original TV series! In fact, one of the best things about this, is that it never insults the material. It comes off more as a tribute / homage film, and not a parody. The main characters: Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie), The Count (Daniel Roebuck), and, of course, Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips), are all well-realized. The actors get the mannerisms down as well as the look. The costumes / makeup are great, and there are tons of Easter Eggs for fans of the show to discover.

One of the main complaints seems to be the psychedelic color scheme. To be fair, the Director wanted to film it in black and white but was overruled by studio meddlers. So, he decided to go all-out day-glo, and it works!

There's a nice cameo performance by Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson as well.

A fun, harmless movie for the entire family...

    Just enjoy a campy movie!
If you thought you were going to watch a film that was a combination of Frankenstein, the bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Werewolf...... sorry to disappoint you but no, this is a movie based on a TV show from the 60's , based on the main characters of those novels mentioned before, in which the personality and history of each character was changed in a way that made possible to see them funny and clumsy instead of scary and dramatic. Once you understand that, you'll see what an awesome time you'll have watching this bunch of crazy gouls going through simple situations, turn them into corny and campy mini adventures, and laugh about it. It was meant to entertain, not to analyze.

You can call this movie a prequel. The plot happens before what the world saw in the 60's TV show. That gives the director and writers more freedom ( but not a lot) to create a history that can explain what happens later and why. The movie keeps the characters most beloved characteristics intact: Herman's dumb sense of humor, Lilly's funny stoicism, and Grampa's acid sarcasm. Mix all that weirdness up with great scenography, funny lighting details, dull jokes, over the top acting (in some instances), and you get a film that brings back some of the 60's show nostalgia, some new life to the original story, and an awesome reason to sit down with family and friends to spend a couple of hours together.

Don't over analyze this movie, it's not a documentary, a drama, a horror, suspense, or thriller; it's Rob Zombie's vision of one of his favorite shows that he wanted to share with the world. Take it as what it is, enjoy it!!

    Personally, I loved it
As an old time Munsters fan, and Zombie fan, I found this movie alright. The colrs are perfect and amazingly kooky. Though, some of the timing and plot is off and rewrites the orginal.

I still found it a cute love story and the actor of Herman did amazingly. I wish Patrick (Origanl Eddie Munster) would've made a cameo in this film. Grandpa's addition of a mustache was my favorite, as orginal concepts had him have one.

I wish we had more spinoffs, films, shows, etc. Like the Addams Family.

Give this movie a shot, forget Zombie wrote it and maybe you'll grow to like it!

7 out of 10 pumpkins in my book!

    Painfully bad
I so wanted this to be fun. I'm a huge fan of Rob Zombie's music, campiness, and what he pulled off with Halloween so I expected an engaging romp. Nope. I should have given up after 5 minutes but I gave it 30 before I couldn't stand it anymore. This "film" is an assault on cinema. I honestly didn't expect much other than being moderately, nostalgicly, and to be honest, mindlessly entertained. But it was so sophomoricly stupid I feel violated for wasting 30 minutes of my time to watch 1/4 of the movie. The story is ridiculous, the acting is godawful, and though I've heard Zombie did it intentionally with the film stock, it looks like it was shot with an iPhone.

"If the Tomb is Rocking, Don't Come Knocking."
Horror comic in dayglo colors brings together marriage-minded vampiress Lily with congenial monster Herman Munster, who is made up of reanimated cadaver parts...plus the misplaced brain of a Transylvanian comedian. Where is Mel Brooks when you need him? Despite (rather insistent) reports that writer-director Rob Zombie is a big fan of the 1964-1966 TV series "The Munsters", his sense of humor is that of a slightly updated Borscht Belt comic (it's hip without the zest of hip). Sheri Moon Zombie makes an impressive entrance as Lily, but her very modern, very fluttery personality is too close to that of Elvira's (perhaps having the Mistress of the Dark herself, Cassandra Peterson, on-set playing Barbara was too much of an influence?). Daniel Roebuck as Lily's father The Count comes closest to replicating the good fun of the TV show (Roebuck has done his homework, and not only sounds like Al Lewis's Grandpa but has his mannerisms seemingly ingrained in him). The look of the movie is just fine (shot in Budapest at a cost of $9M, the money is there on the screen), but Rob Zombie's pacing drags. Worse (much worse) is Jeff Daniel Phillips as green-faced Herman; humor is always subjective (the beloved original was often very silly, too), but this overgrown kid is just a squeaky-voiced schnook. I couldn't wait for the early mad scientist stuff to be dispensed with; however, once the plot kicks in--something about Uncle Lester owing money to a gypsy--we're stuck with Phillips' misguided overacting combined with Sheri Moon Zombie's airhead tittering about. True fans will balk, as I did. * from ****

    Pure fun! Happy Halloween!!
Just so much fun!! Great lightweight Halloween jaunt. Yeah yeah, so what it all looks straight to video budget and the set and special effects look like they came straight from Spirit Halloween. That's the charm!! That's the fun!! And Sheri Moon Zombie is absolutely captivating as Lily. The camera adores her. For a PG straight to video, I say this is a gift. Gave it 8 stars because a 10 is a Star Wars or the Godfather or the Devil's Rejects. Loved it, and so should you. Honestly, except for It's Halloween Charlie Brown, what other Halloween movie could you watch with your family? Yeah, nothing. Enjoy!!
