Thar has some great visuals, but because of a thin plotline it doesn't make for an engaging watch.
The trailer made Thar look like a whodunit thriller, but shortly into the film we find out as to who did it, the actual question is why it was done. In my honest opinion, a murder mystery with multiple suspects is much more exciting to watch. The movie looks very good, the cinematography by Shreya Dev Dube is truly amazing, the Thar Desert provides great atmospherics, Anil Kapoor is in top form as Inspector Surekha Singh and Anurag Kashyap's dialogues filled with hundreds of expletives hit you hard, but the movie is not quite enjoyable to watch.

    WHAT'S NOT GOOD :

    1. Thar moves at a pretty slow pace, even at 108 minutes it feels long because it really tests your patience.

    2. Very soon it becomes clear that this is a revenge drama, and then we see the main character going out every day to torture the killers. That is all what he does in the entire film. I was hoping for something more to happen in the story but unfortunately that was all the movie had to offer. From the screenplay point of view, Thar doesn't have enough to hold your interest as a viewer.

    3. There is a parallel storyline about drug smugglers operating from the desert, who keep clashing with the Police, but ultimately it came out to be nothing. What was the point of it ? I was hoping that story would somehow link with the murders, but that never happened, so why did the director add that sub-plot to the film ? Just to give Surekha Singh's character something to do ?

    4. The story demanded Harshvardhan Kapoor to have a serious look throughout the film, but that cannot justify his expressionless look in the entire film. Harshvardhan has been really struggling as an actor, because he is just not able to bring any kind of expression on his face, he delivers every single dialogue in the same way. It may sound harsh, but he does come across as a one note actor.

    5. The director and writers have touched many social issues through this film and everything has been amalgamated very well in the storyline, but they forgot to put some effort in the actual plot of the film. The plot of the film is quite thin and as a viewer I did not find it engaging at all.

    WHAT'S GOOD :

    1. Anil Kapoor is brilliant as Surekha Singh. He is a thespian who just doesn't know how to give a below par performance. Without him, this film would be quite difficult to watch. Anil's scenes with Satish Kaushik are some of the best scenes of the film.

    2. Satish Kaushik shines as Anil Kapoor's co-worker. Thar becomes a very different film every time Anil Kapoor and Satish Kaushik are shown to be interacting with each other.

    3. Jitendra Joshi as Panna had a very short role, but he has given a brilliant performance and came across as extremely menacing. I really wish he had been given a bigger role and more dialogues.

    4. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Mukti Mohan don't have a lot to do in the film, but they have managed to make an impact.

    5. The visuals of the film are spectacular. The desert land has been captured beautifully by cinematographer Shreya Dev Dube, as a viewer you are tempted to visit the place.
