Cyrano

A man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac dazzles whether with ferocious wordplay at a verbal joust or with brilliant swordplay in a duel. But, convinced that his appearance renders him unworthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne, Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her—and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian.

    Ultimately, a little empty
Directed by: Joe Wright Written by: Erica Schmidt

    SUMMARY

The skilled soldier, but ugly dwarf Cyrano, is in love with Roxanne. Roxanne falls for a handsome soldier, Christian. Cyrano, a skilled poet, writes Christian letters of love to give to Roxanne and Roxanne falls in love with Christian. The two even marry. But then the soldiers are sent off to war where Christian dies. Cyrano comes back from the war and confesses to Roxanne, and then dies.

    RATING

    B

Cyrano is a romantic drama based on the idea of a love triangle, where the love interest Roxanne, is actually in love with the words of the main character, Cyrano. It is filmed in a very romantic and lush kind of way, which I enjoyed. I know that the original play was a downer ending - with Cyrano dying - but I really feel like the ending leaves the movie feeling pretty empty.

    Absolutely beautiful
I cannot understand why this film wasn't a huge hit?! I can only assume it has something to do with the fact it's a musical, and the lead actress is not hugely well known. The music is actually beautiful, the story really tugged at my heart strings. I'd definitely recommend and will certainly watch again. Comparing it to something like Moulin Rouge, this movie is much more convincing. Peter Dinklage is a fine actor, and his performance so moving. I recall the 1980s version, and I think perhaps that was more comedic, but this is a captivating love story, that any period and drama fan would enjoy.

    Cyrano Common Sense Review
I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this film. My wife had heard of it before but I only had the trailers to go off of and they intrigued me. A colorful, sometimes overwhelmingly so, musical that surrounds the love triangle between Cyrano, his best friend and love interest Roxanne, and outsider Christian. This film definitely felt its length of just over two hours and was very Shakespearean in its presentation and dialogue. It kept my interest throughout and was very well acted, but it could have been toned down some in dialogue, the trimming of certain scenes, and an overwhelming amount of movement and color throughout.

What were your thoughts on the film?

    Sweet & sumptuous.
Oh, this was utterly gorgeous, unashamedly adorable & an unexpected delight, from beginning to end.

I should've foreseen this project's eventual success, considering the sheer strength of the premise, reuniting visionary director Jo Wright with his most dependable cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey (who previously shot his masterpiece, "Atonement", subsequent misfire "Pan" & the striking "Anna Karenina") but irrespective of the impressiveness of their combined credentials (& inimitable styles that enhance each other's so wonderfully), I dared not dream that they would create their best film for number of years again (since his filmography is admittedly hit & miss at times), yet I'm enthralled to concede that despite my prior cynicism & preconceived doubts, "Cyrano" is a classic, sprawling, hopeful, heartfelt Shakespearian tragedy, playing out as though it were a linguistic symphony, chronicling a romance that's ultimately doomed by the barriers erected in the protagonist's own mind, which manifest themselves physically through the form of written letters & well-intentioned subterfuge - whilst equally, acting as a profoundly moving exploration in to the power of love itself; how despite the imperfections borne from insecurities or doubt, expressions of it are ultimately able to transcend those aforementioned barriers thrown in its path, if the feelings are strong enough to overcome such seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Seldom have I been left so deeply touched by a narrative that endeavours to capture the unconditional, yearning selflessness of adoration & the consequential loneliness left in its absence, but here I am - in admiration of its rare achievements. It also feels especially poignant, acknowledging in its denouement that despite the honesty often captured in poetic words, language is still most effective when spoken truthfully, delivered from the heart - in person - to the recipient.

Hence, the movie's a deeply flawed, human tale, told intimately & with passion both in front of & behind the camera - reflecting the lyrical quality of the dialogue in the filmmaking which shares that palpable love of skilfully constructed tenderness.

Furthermore, Peter Dinklage owns the role with his indomitable performance & it's genuinely beautiful to witness his talents put to phenomenal use, eloquently articulating such evocative ruminations with sincerity & authenticity, conveyed so artistically in every conceivable manner. Bravo.

Completely engaged, swept up, and entertained.
This version of the story of Cyrano and Roxanne was totally captivating. From the performances of the captivating Peter Dinklage, the lovely Haley Bennett, and the fresh face of Kelvin Harrison, Jr...to the energy and lyrical content of the music, it was easy to become fully invested.

Though anxiously awaiting the "happily ever after" we all long for in our experiences at the cinema, the storyline, script, and placement of musical numbers keeps one fully engaged while awaiting the outcome of the age-old story of what was considered an unacceptable "pairing of hearts." Having always loved this tale of love and heartache, I found this to be a true theatrical triumph.

A total bomb of a movie!
First of all, only ignoramuses would like this movie. I will start by saying I love Dinklage as an actor, and if not for him, I'd have no interest in this at all.

What a waste of 2 hours. I could tell as soon as it started this wasn't going to be good. It was all downhill from there. Most of the actors in this 'musical' can't sing well, and don't really even try much. The characters were never introdiced, no backstory, no getting to know them - nothing. The characters were just dumped in your lap from the start. It felt like we got there late and started from the middle of the movie. But no. That was the beginning. There was no beginning. None of the characters were likable, or particularly unlikable nor made me care what happened to them. It was more like a local play than an actual movie. The singing and writing were B-movie fodder and the only good things in the movie were the acting of Peter Dinklage, and the sets. Even the songs were dreck! I was expecting a well done movie and this was definitely not that. It seems as if it were sloppily done and rushed from the writing to the casting. Everyone except the main girl were miscast. Just a dud of a movie. I'd say 2 thumbs down. Skip this.
