    Another below average shark movie
Reviewed this as part of my studies in communication. Cinematography, casting and location was good. Props are effective as is the technical direction for sets to conserve budget. The plot though was as engaging as a beached jellyfish. The shark had more character than the main cast. That's not to say the cast wasn't good. They did well in spite of the writing. You would think the director having been at it now for over 10 years doing "predator horror" films would be able to engage the audience effectively by now. Such a rich heritage in suspense horror. Traucki story telling was too predictable. Some clever use of effects give a good sense of presence of the shark. But other times it was clearly stock footage. Shark attack films are a well worn theme that only appeals to teens. Even more predictably the main cast are all young women in their late teens. So very much a yawn-fest of typical character types you can expect.

Not as impactful as the original
The Reef is perhaps the most terrifying shark movie I have ever seen. It was stunningly realistic, so even though the characters were flat and the acting was weak I was still gripping the edge of my seat the whole time. It was naturally going to be tough to follow.

The sequel at least puts in the work to flesh (some of) the characters out and explore their relationships. They did something interesting with the main character's PTSD that colored her experience in the water, but the acting was still generally subpar.

The movie definitely has its moments of both jump scares and unnerving realism, but it just wasn't as effective as the first one. There were a lot of things they could have done differently to build more suspense (the shark generally doesn't do much other than you see the fin circling them, whereas the original showcased a range of realistic shark behavior). If you've ever seen a real life story of shark encounters with kayakers, it's pretty terrifying and there's more the movie could have done.

They basically tried to imitate The Shallows by the end, which was a weird choice to me. The impact of the first movie was in the sense of powerlessness you get, there's seriously nothing you can do in that situation. So departing from that was a weird choice for me.

Definitely worth the watch, but not the best (or worst) shark movie.

    Boo Hoo
This movie is really slow. The characters cry and poke along like they are enjoying a leisure trip. When they should be swimming or paddling for their lives, they stop to stare, cry, or argue. The main character is really like a depressed scared rabbit. And when their friend gets knocked out of the boat, instead of paddling to her, they just sit there waiting for her to swim to them. You may find yourself yelling at them for their stupidity and slow reactions. I did!

The shark scenes are short and quick. You hardly ever see the shark except for glimpses.

The scenery is lovely, but overcast a great deal. Swim for your life away from this movie, because you'll never get those two hours back. Unless you need a nice long nap. Mute it so you don't have to be bothered by all the crying and whining.

    Hungry
No pun intended - like many other movies before it, this does paint sharks in a ... well not flattery light. Which is a sham to say the least, when it comes to our perception of the animal itself. On the other hand, I reckon it is necessary to give us some tension and suspense.

That all being said, the premise itself is not really the best one. There are things in here, I would never really approve of. But it is what it is ... and we do have crazy people and situations .. with an even crazier "villain" ... and one that is way too hungry for its own good ... there are some interesting scenes in this ... and it does look kinda good, if you are into that sort of thing. Wasn't a fan of the previous Reef, but it was at least a little bit better for sure.

The acting was so bad I was rooting hard for the shark up until I fell asleep...
The worst movie I've ever seen by far...the story is wasn't clear, terrible actors (literally all of them) badly done stitches of discovery channel footage of sharks and definitely not scary...took me about 15 minutes to call it quits and 8 more minutes to fall asleep.

In short , stay away at all cost if you care for your time. I'm not sure why there are some 10/10 ratings over here (I guess it's the actors family and friends? Lol) but this movie is 1/10 in a good day and only because I can't rate it as a negative number.

IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR TIME - STAY AWAYYYYYY PLEASE DON"T WATCH!!!!!!!!!

    Boring
So very slow and boring. Some decent shark scenes and that's the only reason I gave it a 4. I wouldn't even bother watching it, absolute waste of time.
