pivovaramilana - 9 June 2024 Loved it! It was really really good. 100% my type of movie! It kept me on edge all the time. For me this is hands down one of the greatest new released movies. No ,,monsters", no funky characters, no unreal BS. Just the way I like it.
It was made in a good manner and editing was good with some neutral jump scares. I loved the most that it was realistic, like it could actually happen to anybody.
I know the movie is good when I talk to tv like ,,Don't go there.. no! What are you doing?" It was what happened. It made sence and at the same time it kept me like really really anxious. Maybe also for some people it was ,,slow" or whatever, but not for me. I enjoyed the story.
Hax0b - 10 March 2024 Really poor writing. An hour into the film, I found myself wishing it would delve deeper into the protagonist's paranoia and its ripple effects on her life and those around her-a promising angle that could have added layers of complexity. However, the storyline veers off into a more conventional territory with a serial killer lurking from a window across the street, a twist that felt uninspired and lacked the nuance of a truly menacing presence.
The plot thickens, but not necessarily for the better, when it's revealed that the killer works in the same workplace as the protagonist's neighbor, whom he later targets. This development, along with the fact that the police are already know about his stalker behavior, somehow doesn't deter his actions, which strains believability.
The climax of the story, featuring a coincidental encounter on the train with the killer carrying a bag that presumably contains a decapitated head, seemed to me at first, to push the story towards an intriguing psychological twist. The possibility that it could all be a figment of the protagonist's imagination hinted at a clever narrative device that might have salvaged the plot's earlier missteps.
Yet, the film opts for a straightforward conclusion, missing an opportunity to explore the psychological depth it briefly flirted with. The final scene, in particular, stretches credibility to its limits, leaving one to ponder what might have been if the story had embraced the darker corners of the human psyche it initially teased. Might as well have the headless body do the shooting.
sameedacca - 1 January 2024 A Slow-Burning Thriller that Fizzles Out The movie begins with a slow and suspenseful build-up that effectively keeps you on the edge for the initial 30 minutes. However, as the plot unfolds, the gradual build-up starts to feel dragged on without a satisfying climax.
The acting by the cast is subpar, leaving uncertainty about whether this might be their first film. The romance between the main characters follows clichés and feels cringey, adding to the movie's lackluster middle portion.
Despite a promising start, the film becomes mundane and boring. The ending, unfortunately, fails to deliver the expected resolution, leaving much to be desired. Overall, "The Watcher" struggles to maintain its early momentum and falls short of creating a truly engaging thriller experience.
danielcereto - 2 December 2022 Boring The movie starts in a good way but then sinks by itself.
First, the script is full of cliches and a lot of incoherent dumb situations. Second, there are some strange people showing up and disappearing for no reason. Last, nothing new happens in the whole movie. Pretty boring from beginning till the end. Predictable and easy to forget.
To add, I don't understand why all the Rumanian dialogues are not translated. Almost 20 minutes in total without knowing what are they talking about. Why? A total failure.
So, I just recommend to skip this one and go for a walk. Healthier to your mind and your body.
mancuniangr - 8 November 2022 Very good You always are hesitant when you come to watch thrillers, cause you don't know what to expect, especially about the scenario and how the movie will ''build'' and develop, and above all, if all this is enough to keep you interesting. Well the answer considering the Watcher is a big yes. The movie definitely keeps you interesting till the last second and they are basically two reasons for that ,firstly the very good direction by Chloe Okuno and secondly the excellent performance of Maika Monroe. Okuno directs taking elements in the first part of the movie from Rear Window(you can watch all your neighbours from your window) and then by making us guess if the supposed watcher is a psycopath or an innocent man. She later ''turns'' the hunted Julia(Monroe) into a hunter, by stalking her supposedly stalker. The scenes around Bucharest are also well taken and overall it's a very good effort from her. Also a pleasant surpise is the performance of Maika Monroe, not your classic blonde beautiful woman, but a very likeable and warm persona. She starts by not wanting to admit that she is targeted by a stranger, but minute by minute she gets convinced that actually this is what is happening. She doesn't exaggerate and she definitely gives an excellent performance. Overall Watcer is a solid, believable and enjoyable thriller that you won't pass as many other films of the same origin.
mdiamond-29738 - 15 October 2022 Close but not quite I can't decide if I adore Maika Monroe because of her slightly off performances or if I just can't look away. She's an interesting actress. I'm not sure if she keeps landing roles with awkward dialogue or if she's just an awkward person (which doesn't necessarily mean a bad actor). Either way, I enjoyed her performance in this and as a woman could really feel the isolation and dread she was experiencing. Her husband was TRASH, I'm so sick of seeing this type of man in movies but hey, I guess it's realistic. I was honestly more horrified by their awful marriage and total lack of communication/connection than the actual horrors at play.
The atmosphere felt both vast/unknown and suffocating at the same time, and the choice to not include subtitles for the vast amount of Romanian dialogue really added to that effect.
In the end, a bit too formulaic. The final scene is predictable and without much to say.
