    I quite enjoyed this
It's funny that much of what I loved about this movies are the very same things that some others have faulted.

First, is the movie low budget? Perhaps, but I didn't think that impacted the movie whatsoever. The movie is set in the early 18th century American plains and I felt the locations and cinematography put us right there. The score was good. It didn't feel low budget to me.

Yes, the actors are mostly unknown but is that a fair criticism? How many native american actors can you name right off? And the leads are excellent. I loved the performance by Amber Midthunder.

I read a criticism about the time spent on "the nonsense with tribal dynamics and Naru's empowerment issues." I quite enjoyed Naru's empowerment storyline, in fact. I loved her heroic return to the tribe with the head of the predator. Moreover, once the fight with the predator began, I never felt Naru was fighting to prove herself but for survival. As did the protagonists in all other predator movies.

Others have complained that this isn't a faithful continuation of the predator franchise. Funny, because I almost didn't watch this precisely because I was expecting to be just another predictable installment in the predator franchise. I am so happy I did watch it. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the cast. I loved Amber Midthunder.

Predator Prequel Tries To Do Something Different
Prey is a prequel to the original Predator film and set during the 1700's where a Comanche tribe is hunted by the original Predator. Starring a no name cast the film manages to make you care about the lead character and her battle to prove her worth. The cinematography is fantastic, this film really looks good and the CGI is not too intrusive. Where the film falls down for me is that it provides nothing really new aside from the setting. At least Predator 2 had the guts to send Danny Glover on board the alien ship at the end. Also, aside from the main character and her brother the other characters were not fully developed enough. The original Predator for example had a team full of differing characters all who made an impact and are memorable. In summary Prey is a worthy addition to the Predator franchise but other films in the series are better than this. Prey is a solid rather than spectacular film.

Revamped a tired IP AND broke new ground by being the first-ever film to be dubbed in the indigenous Comanche language!
THIS is how you make a prequel or reboot!!!

I don't know how studios continue to produce subpar or terrible theatrical releases while this Hulu original revamped a tired IP AND broke new ground by being the first-ever film to be dubbed in the indigenous Comanche language!

I'm really glad that both the Hulu and the physical release include the full Comanche dub (which features stars Amber Midthunder and Dakota Beavers voicing their own characters) because that, in my opinion, is the DEFINITIVE version of the film.

The filmmakers did the right thing by bringing on Comanche consultants Jhane Myers, Dustin Tahmahkera, and Juanita Pahdopony (though I'm sure that there are still things that aren't 100% accurate because studio execs always have the final say).

The viewers are dropped into the 1700s and we meet our protagonist, Naru (Amber Midthunder*). No exposition, no origin story - we watch as the Predator hunts earth predators (rattlesnake, wolf) and as the Comanche hunt a lion that maimed one of their members, the suspense building as their paths gradually reach a crosspoint.

It isn't necessary to watch any of the past "Predator" movies. I'm sure there are details and easter eggs, but this is a standalone prequel (reboot?). The Predator is simply an extraterrestrial creature that happens to cross paths with a tribe of indigenous badasses.

The CGI is well done and isn't over the top. The action feels grounded. We connect with the characters and the stakes are high throughout. Overall, a great and unique thriller!

    Hunter, fighter and discoverer
This one really fooled me. I had no intentions of liking this movie as well as I did. Get into a wayback machine stopping in the early 1700s. A young Comanche woman Naru (Amber Midthunder), in the Great Plains, already a trained healer, dreams of becoming a great hunter like her brother, Taabe (Dakato Beavers). While tracking deer, she witnesses lights of an alien Predator's spacecraft. When apt tribe members are attacked, maimed and killed, large unusual tracks are left behind, obviously cougars and mountain lions are not suspected attackers. When a herd of skinned bison are found, a nearby grizzly bear attacks Naru, who in turn watches the bear meet its death in a most horrid manner. Her story of the Predator discovery is going to be hard to believe. Captivating visuals and sustainable story line.

Also in the cast: Julian Black, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Bennett Taylor and Dane DiLiergo.

    Prey (2022)
Just watched the new movie in the Predator franchise 'Prey' and it was.. okay. Not as bad as Shane Black's 'The Predator' but hardly a watershed moment. The first hour is more of a coming of age story but really picks up during the third act - including some nice action set pieces.

It's very evident that this outing had a very moderate budget resulting in some uneven special effects and production value. The Predator itself gets a mild redesign that I did not like very much but the story does get back to the basic premise of an alien hunter out on safari. It's entertaining in spots but hard to wholeheartedly recommend. 6/10.

"The Predator Will Soon Become The Prey." - I.N.K.
The original Predator is easily my favorite creature feature of all time. Not only because of the titular monster. That has an absolutely iconic monster design.

So this Hulu original had big shoes to fill. Thankfully they did, giving us easily the second best movie in the Predator franchise.

What makes this a very special adventure, is how they completely avoiding having a lazy rehash of the original. While also staying true to the spirit of the original. For instance in Predator the setting of Vietnam played a massive role. And in Prey they used the setting of the Northern Great Plains in the 1700s to serve the same purpose.

Tying back into the setting is the brilliant usage of Native Americans as our focal characters. Such as our protagonist Naru played excellently by the beautiful Amber Midthunder. The other main character of note is her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers), who is a respectful older brother. But also acknowledges her failures, despite how much she wants to be a hunter.

The actor Dakota was also clearly having a great time in the role. That is reminiscent of how much fun the original cast was having. And that energy is incredibly infectious as a viewer.

We've waited long enough, the Predator in this film matched perfectly. Since not only did it feel intimidating and dangerous. But the creature had a slightly more unique skull shape. Along with an awesome bone mask, and some form of dart gun. As opposed to the plasma caster of Predator.

In conclusion, this film was a surprising success. And gives me a little more hope for future franchise revivals.

    This was absolutely unnecessary
To say this movie was absolutely unnecessary and to call it a hot mess would be generous to it. I really have absolutely no idea why this movie was even made and who was green like this project. Were they really trying to make a profit with this movie or were they trying to further the girl power agenda. Like many other people that review this movie has stated the cinematography is absolutely wonderful. But if we are to believe that a 5 foot 100 pound female can tackle a space alien with a tomahawk on a string then we should all have our heads examined. We have seen women characters in action movies with no superpowers do incredible things but this takes the cake. Don't even waste your time with this movie.

    Cliche After Cliche
First off, I have to admit that I did not finish watching this movie. After almost halfway in I realized it was a waste of time and found something more meaningful to do like counting change. The thing that really killed it for me was the recurring cliche, I want to hunt, no you're a girl, I want to hunt, no you're a girl I'm going to hunt anyway. Yawn. I would bet money, having not seen the ending, that the girl ends up killing the predator. Second cliche, all the wisdom one liners that almost make sense. The movie is full of them. It was like a bad Kung Fu movie.

Despite the bad writing the movie does have some redeeming qualities. The scenery is beautiful and the cinematography is excellent, especially during the action sequences. The CGI is seamless and very realistic. Amber Midthunder is a gifted actress that does a superb job playing Naru.

If you have time to waste and are a fan of the Predator series then go for it. Otherwise give this movie a pass.
