deepanagarajan - 18 April 2024 Highly and criminally underrated Go give 10 stars!
Amazingly and painfully beautiful character Michael. Transforming Angel's heart...what a beautiful movie. Loved from the start till the end.
The mid 1800s plight of women is portrayed beautifully. Only in God can people find true love and devotion...this kind of love or marriage is not seen these days at all. When God is tye center of our relationships it's His satisfaction that we seek and strive for and not even our own partner. That's why relationships centered in God work despite challenges. Else, divorces and abuses are the rule of the day today. Spirituality is surely lacking these days. And that's what the movie portrays so beautifully. Must watch... atleast 3 times.
ashazamm - 10 January 2024 Beautiful movie I've watched this movie maybe a dozen times and each time, I love it more and more. I have one complaint and one praise.
I never read the book and sometimes it doesn't translate well into a movie so I can't speak to that in this case. The scene when Michael is talking to God, asking for him to send him a partner is a great scene. Cut to him seeing Angel for the first time and whispering that she was the one and God had a sense of humor confused me. How did he know she was the one? I went back to re-watch the scene and I thought I missed him asking God to send him an angel (something I would have changed in the film) and he didn't. So how did he know she was the one God wanted him to pursue? I thought that one little detail would have been better in the movie and connected them. That was my one complaint.
Abigail Cowen as Angel and Tom Lewis as Michael had some wonderful moments, they are great actors and really made the characters likeable. But can I please take a moment and point out Logan Marshall-Green's performance as Paul? He was AMAZING in this part. He was a stand out for me. Hands down the best emotional performance I've seen in a long time.
FabZidler - 22 September 2023 Accidentally watched it Watched it without knowing it was 1. Based on a book, and 2. Based on a Christian book (with, what seems like, a cult following).
Imagine my surprise when the movie, that I thought was going to be a simple love story, turns out to be about a man who won't give up on manipulating a prostitute into marrying him (multiple times!!!).
I am an atheist, unlike most other people who watched and reviewed this movie, and I do not think that the sex scenes are explicit in any way nor do I think that the movie in any way should result in a feeling of "oooh that's real love!!!".
It is not love, it is messed up and no sane mind should aspire to have that.
Only positive things I have to say is that the reviews on here have made me laugh out loud several times, and the movie was also beautiful to look at.
Would also like to add; what kind of movies do you fellow reviewers usually watch, for this movie to make you all so mad about the side-boob in this one? Oh to live the life of an American Christian for one day...
bassmagadalla - 6 October 2022 I am not christian I did not read the novel before watching the movie so my initial rating was 8 as I didn't like how they drew Michael's character, I didn't feel he was human he was more like an angle with no human feelings. I didn't feel his anger when he saw his wife with another man or his sorrow when Angel left him the second time.
This movie missed the core of this novel. It did not show what Angel did to help her old fellows get out of prostitution. It didn't show How Angel became religious. I didn't show how Michael acted when he saw Angel under another man especially after all the good he had done to her and how he overcame his anger. It didn't show Angel's trying to pay her dept to Michael before leaving him. This movie is so shallow compared to the novel. I think it should have been a mini-series instead of a movie so they would have enough time to deliver this novel perfectly to the audience.
I loved the costumes, sets and the actors.
dmhttrhk - 29 August 2022 Don't listen to the bad reviews First of all , this is the best love story film I've ever seen and shall I add puts the Notebook to shame ? Once I quoted the tears from my face I was finally able to construct a review . Amazing how the director was able to incorporate what I believe to be the most crucial messages for both men and women . Obviously the story line is based upon forgiveness of both self and others but there is also so much more and the director did a beautiful job . The acting was phenomenal and I was pleased to see one of my favorite's Nina Dobrev casted in the role as Angel's mother . Steamy romance scenes , chemistry between the lead roles , were just added bonuses . Beautiful job conveying crucial biblical lessons in a way that can be received whether you are religious or not . Not sure how much went into the film but it was very well done . I'll be recommending to all .
