maldendorff - 25 February 2024 Well meant but it missed the right focus Of what I thought was going to be a film where we would see the stress a war dog has to deal with but most of all in which we would get a look into the incredible bond, the love and respect between the dog and the handler, unfortunately it didn't show much of that.
Most of that was actually shown in the war diary in the intro and in the end.
It annoyed me that it took so long for Channing's character, to see that. That moment when it clicked.
I hoped for more recognition of the dog's and his own trauma.
That he would realize that dogs go through the same emotions as we do. And that we should approach them the same way.
And why did he keep calling Lulu "Dog" the whole time? So annoying! He didn't really make an effort to connect with Lulu.
He must have had his reasons..
That's what we don't really get to see.
Missed opportunities if you ask me.
I did like the look on Lulu's face when she looked back at him though and I'm glad the ending made up for it all a little bit after all.
Ed-Shullivan - 14 July 2023 A road trip that takes Jackson Briggs on an unexpected yet worthy journeys ending Jackson Briggs (Channing Tatum) is a lifetime soldier who finds himself rudderless without a war to go to as he remains under doctor's care for head trauma he has suffered. When Jackson pleads with his commanding officer to clear him for active duty, his commanding officer tells Briggs he has one of those Mission Impossible assignments "Your mission Briggs should you choose to accept it......" and if he chooses the assignment and passes he will clear Briggs once again for active duty.
The assignment was to courier a dead soldier's dog Lulu (a Belgian Malinois) via a race down the Pacific Coast to get to a fellow soldier's funeral on time.
Some people are not impressed with stories about relationships between an animal and a person but Mrs. Shullivan and I like as well as need a break from the endless stream of Marvel action films and RomCom's being produced.
This is a nice little road trip film even if the ending is predictable as mom and apple pie. I still think it is worthy of a 7 out of 10 IMDb rating.
mwmentor - 14 January 2023 Disappointing I was looking forward to watching this movie so much; the trailer has given me the impression that it was really good.
I found the scenes with Channing Tatum going through monologues, and interactions in some scenes really bad/boring.
In the opening half hour He meets some women in a bar or something and ends up in their boudoir which although nothing visible happened let me distinctly uncomfortable and in fact I decided to fast forward to the end of the scene. It was just not something that I wanted to expose my fourteen year old to.
The scenes with the dog were awesome and she was the real star of the show. Brilliantly trained and choreographed, she was a real joy to watch. Quite frankly, without her on board there would absolutely no reason to watch the movie. Which is not good... each character should be adding to the value of the movie. In this instance I didn't think that they did... I was actually wondering who the movie was targeted at and why? Is it a recruiting movie? Is it aimed at young teens? Get rid of the boudoir scene. Or is it aimed at older teens, around 17/18? I don't think that they would enjoy it or even watch it...
So sadly, I did not enjoy the movie overall, except for the dog itself who is amazing.
kcitraro - 18 December 2022 I speak dog and this movie is great. No offense to Chatum. Tanning but I wish this movie featured a lesser known less hot actor. If so, the movie I guarantee would rate in the 8' s. I think often when reviewing hot male actors many discredit the film thinking that it's just about this actor . That said, Chatum did great. His acting is spot on for service experience. I know. I live less than 5 miles from Camp Legeune. I felt like Chatum acted exactly like my friends serving. And dog? My god! Lulu is the star of this film by far. Lulu was able to make me believe she really was doing what she was doing at all times. No spoilers. The funeral scene I couldn't even breathe! I was mourning with her. This is a twist on what you'd imagine a dog movie to be. It's not exactly like every other dog movie. Like my title, I speak dog. So very often I'm able to relate and become one with a dog where others struggle. Let's say I get them. This movie is about someone who just doesn't get dogs and Lulu helps him understand dogs ways. Lulu is extremely well trained. Scenery awesome. Lighting and sound are perfect, which is really hard on some of these scenes. Wardrobe did a great job. Acting as I said is great. Directing really captured the feeling of this film. All in all a well done film that makes you smile , laugh and cry as you'd expect. I highly recommend this film.
oshngrl - 10 November 2022 I absolutely love this movie. This is my favorite film and probably will remain so for a long, long time.
It is beautifully written, the soundtrack is lovely, and the
issues it brings out are so important for all, military and civilian, to understand.
Let's face it, most of us are not thinking about veterans, and we're certainly not thinking about their dogs, and I hope this beautiful piece of work does something to change that.
Channing Tatum is so good as a wounded veteran
trying to get back in the game, and I loved LuLu from the first moment we set eyes on her. But your heart breaks for both of them because they are both terribly damaged by war. They both desperately need to heal, and through each other, we see healing take place.
It's also very witty, very well written. I really encourage people to see this film, you can kind of tell that it is a work of love, but it's also a great piece of filmmaking.
dontaybengals - 14 October 2022 What were they going for? I don't understand what kind of audience they were trying to draw here. I feel like they should have made this a family movie, instead they made it an adult film. The comedy is weak, the journey is short (and off track), and I didn't personally feel the emotion they were trying to deliver. They tried to show a little bit of the trauma and effects of war but then followed it up immediately by the main character trying to pick up women. On a positive note the acting was good and the dog was something that kept me in the movie for so long. Overall a forgettable movie. I felt generous and gave it a 5 out of 10 in case you men are trying to just find a movie you can half pay attention to while you hang out with your girl.
