dszabo-53136 - 21 March 2024 Masterpiece As a fervent enthusiast of innovative storytelling, "Squid Game" left an indelible mark on me. This South Korean masterpiece transcends conventional boundaries, delivering a visceral and thought-provoking exploration of human nature and societal constructs.
The series intricately weaves together themes of desperation, morality, and the relentless pursuit of survival within the framework of deadly children's games. From the gripping character arcs to the meticulously crafted set designs, every aspect of "Squid Game" is executed with precision and artistry.
What truly sets "Squid Game" apart is its ability to immerse viewers in a world that is both eerily familiar and chillingly dystopian. Through its stark commentary on class disparity and the commodification of human life, the series compels audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about society's insatiable hunger for power and wealth.
Moreover, the ensemble cast delivers powerhouse performances that resonate long after the credits roll. Each character is fleshed out with complexity and depth, evoking empathy and intrigue in equal measure.
In conclusion, "Squid Game" is a tour de force that demands to be experienced. It challenges the viewer to reflect on the fragile nature of humanity while delivering a gripping narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
mrwb77 - 2 December 2023 TV version of battle royale with twists. A very interesting TV show, which asks some quite profound questions of human nature.
If found it similar in theme to Battle Royale 2000 and there is also a comedic style, despite the violence, which reminded me of Shaolin Soccer in some ways.
It's well acted and the emotions of the actors are conveyed very well through the screen.
Putting the players in various life and death situations to see how they will react. With money being the motivator, so they're playing of their free will.
There are definitely parts that don't make a lot of sense. Especially how easily the intruder is spotted and chased down on the island.
As well as the the bridge game where they could easily just crawl along the metal rails.
The old man twist is also unsatisfying, the explanation given didn't really work for me.
Then there's the "James Bond" "villain lair" problem of how they could build such a massively elaborate fortress on the island, complete with mass cremation facility and hundreds of henchman without anyone noticing or leaking what was happening during construction.
Overall, a very enjoyable 9 episodes but not for the squeamish!
TheSquareTiger - 19 October 2023 Absolutely recommend this show This show was amazing but sad we lost Byeok near the end and it does show that people will do anything for money even if it involves death and playing games, not only this but it also shows how close people become near the end and it made me cry to see Ji Yeong sacrifice herself to Byeok in the marble game and for Byeok to get stabbed by Sang Woo. Yeah it might be bloody and gory, but it was amazing and I cannot wait for season 2 and hope we get to see the actress for Byeok but maybe she plays a new character and also the actress for Ji Yeong too please, I knew it was a popular show and my mum never allowed me to watch it until I watched it secretly on KissAsian website, now I don't regret watching it because I loved it.
Lukasmj - 16 November 2022 Not Bad, but doesn't meet his hype. Squid Game is a Korean Netflix original in which a group of people take part in a mysterious and downright deadly game to win a multi-billion won prize.
"Squid Game" isn't a bad series, but it doesn't live up to its hype by far.
It's very exciting to follow this game of death once, but the characters aren't really particularly written or the twists are somehow surprising.
You can watch it if you're in the mood to see something exciting with a brutal touch, but it's definitely not a must.
I also don't understand why a second season was commissioned.
What should happen now?
Let's see what comes, but I think the series is better served with one season...
Supermanfan-13 - 13 September 2022 Will hook you from the start! After hearing about all the hype and seeing it was one of the most watched series in the entire world I finally found time to watch Squid Game. I have to admit that I had fun watching it and was very entertained throughout the entire season. It's about hundreds of contestants (who are all down on their luck and need money) that are asked to play children's games for an shot at winning a lot of money, 45.6 billion won (about 33 million dollars). The only thing is these children games are now all deadly and the last contestant standing wins all the money. It will pull you into its world and before you know it you'll be hooked. It's a thriller with lots of twists and lots of violence. This is a show that will stay in your mind long after you watched it. I know it's already been renewed for another seasons so I hope they can keep the same magic they had for season one.
goswamikasturi - 17 August 2022 Hwang Dong's proficient script is a bit predictable but the execution is remarkable. People who are in debt are given a chance to free themselves from their burden and earn simply by playing a series of games. Games they had played as children. But the catch is death to all who fail to complete the mission. This implied there would be a single winner who would take the entire cash prize home. The games tested the players' sense of loyalty, truth and honesty. Though cheating was permitted, the games didn't demand mental prowess, only quick thinking and for certain others brute strength and stamina.
The series houses a well-known cast from the charismatic Lee Jung-Jae to handsome Wi Ha-Joon to the beautiful Jung Hoyeon. But you would find yourself being most empathetic towards Ali. Ali was done a good number by the person he trusted the most. It was the most unkind game in the series. (this would definitely be a game for the card of hearts in Alice in Borderland. P. S. If you loved Squid Game you have to watch Alice in Borderland)
I personally loved the 'Tug of War' game sequence. The gore level is at a 6/10 for me. The series lingers on the absolute need for a season 2 for the unresolved issues of season 1. What happened to No. 29? Will Gi-hun re-enter the games to put a stop to the sadistic butchering pleasure of the investors? Does Gong Yoo have a major role in the entire web of Squid Game?
Psst. The K-drama fan in me literally shouts out: Why no why Gong Yoo, why? In a way I'm thankful he makes a cameo as the charismatic recruiter and not as the Frontman.
