midas-3 - 24 May 2024 Nonsensical Trash I've been such a fan of the matrix franchise since 1999 but this trash should have never been made. Here are the problems with this movie as I see it.
1. The machines can manufacture humans now? Well that should be the end of the movie. The entire premise of the matrix franchise is that the machines need humans for energy. If the machines can now create their own humans, they solved their own problem.
2. The explanation for why Neo was put back in the matrix is just plain dumb. Increased energy production? He nearly destroyed the matrix the last time he was in it, why would you put him back in? Computers only deal in logic. This is illogical.
3. Way too much of the movie spent on nostalgia. Remembering the past, call backs, and reminiscing.
4. We never given a real reason as to why Neo was saved from the matrix this time around or why people were looking for him. He has no ties to the new team, humans are no longer at war with the machines, and there is a peace treaty in place. There is no logical reason to disconnect Neo.
5. General Niobe seems to be the only logical person in this movie. She didn't understand why Neo was back and she really didn't want him around. But for some weird reason, she too, becomes illogical in the middle of the movie by authorizing the disconnection of Trinity from the matrix.
6. One of the most interesting aspects of the matrix were the fight scenes. At the time they were incredible to watch and they were very fast paced. This movie lacks those fast paced fight sequences. Unfortunately, this is likely due to Keanu Reeves, being 20 years older than he was when they filmed those original fight scenes.
I feel like they really spit on the franchise when they released this movie. They should have continued the franchise with a new story. The story of the next anomaly, the eighth "the one".
supatube - 22 April 2024 Marche Funèbre Why did it feel like a slow agonizing walk towards death at times and then other times it was transcendent?
So the good:
Carrie-Anne Moss.
She's particularly good in this with a small amount of screen time but she makes it work.
Trinity and Neo Reconnect. It's wonderful. In fact every time they're in a scene together it's wonderful but their reconnecting moment is very nicely done.
The bad:
Double super super awesome bullet time.
Really stupid.
So much looked corny. Like I felt truly embarrassed for some of the moments and I don't even know anyone who made the scene. I was jut totally cringing and how lame some of it looked. Felt. Registered as.
The ugly:
The story.
It starts off interesting enough but as it unpacks itself the film starts to be more work and less adventure and starts to evoke feelings of boredom over excitement. And then it gets stupid. And lacking. Because it's hard not to see John Wick but clearly not John Wick because it's just not on the same level. More lame less slick. You feel me?
I wasn't expecting much. And maybe my expectations were met but it seems easier to have surprised a mediocre outlook.
Swing and a miss.
vivekchandra007 - 5 April 2024 6/10 first watch. 10/10 on second watch I am a big Matrix nerd. Watched it as soon as it came, in 2021 and just felt meh about it. So much mumbo jumbo, new faces, bad actors from Sense8, only Lana directed this, bla bla bla.
Now, in April 2024, I decided to give it a second watch, with no baggage of expectations and Woah! This movie blew me this time, just the OG The Matrix one did. The story is so "meta", nobody could have imagined. The whole notion of "What is real, how do u define real", how will machines upgrade themselves against potential Neo(s), how does it feel to be inside being Matrix for a long long time. The point is about Neo and Trinity, entangle so much together that it doesn't makes sense to keep them separated, instead have them as each others doomed love, a flick from their dreams, a deva vu of work place memories. Yeah, machines would definitely do that. Loved it.
Now, the acting part was phenomenally by new Smith and The Analyst (NPH nailed it). Rest were okayish. The jealousy angle of that girl wo revived Neo and later not wanting Trinity to come back was shown good.
The ending scene of Analyst, Trinity and Neo is damn witty with so much of social commentary.
sublime_x - 31 December 2022 So long strong man, hello strong woman They essentially rewrote how important Trinity is. Now she's the one who can fly and she's just as important as Neo
For 20 years Neo was the One, and now (and likely due to current day cultural polictics) we have to have an empowered woman
Even the song in the end, the original from Rage Against The Machine, is now covered be a female
Come on, The Wachowskis are complicit in reprogramming the masses just like every other current film/show into having us believe that you can't have a strong man without a strong female. This would have been a great opportunity to expose current films and how they use quotas to program their audiences, but no its just another modern day film with a diverse cast and strong female.
fraser-simons - 28 November 2022 Fantastic sequel in many ways I'm even more impressed with this the second go around. I could have done without the bombastic ending but, when you go into video game territory it is a pretty logical follow through. The first half remains my favourite though, because it's actually very clever at showing how mainstream culture co-opted the movies and what they attempted to communicate. Even while showing this as an in-joke, it also pretty deftly forms a continuation of those same themes. And the many reviews of this movie create an even further in-joke, because it's pretty clear a lot of people completely missed the substance and actually did just want the stuff at the pitch meeting.
It's great at asking questions about the generation that managed to effect some change and are too tired to keep fighting, or have been co opted by the system of oppression and radicalized them into complacency and with fear. Kind of like the right did, literally trivializing this movie with the red pill IRL, for instance. But then on top of that there is an exploration of the two-sided nature of nostalgia and the marrying of the masculine and feminine, and a lot more under the hood. The action is great again and the new characters, especially Bug, were fantastic. Aside from swarm mode and a bit too much tongue-in-cheek, this could be on par with the original. But that's okay, it's still quite exceptional.
martinjwolfenden - 6 November 2022 Loved This! Unlike the previous Matrix movies. This pokes some fun at the seriousness of tone that pervades those movies and seeks to move the story away from the whole 'chosen one' trope.
In Hollywood at the moment we are seeing a move away from that particular trope towards groups of friends sharing powers, which I think is a far better way to view the world.
There are some real laughs in this and I think that is simply down to the ages of the film makers and Keanu Reeves himself. Those of us who are now middle aged tend to take the world less seriously and put away our teenage/20s angst, and this tends to lighten the tone of things we're involved in. In short I really liked this film.
jsgraves-53310 - 25 October 2022 Sentimentality killed it's success. Any TRUE Matrix lover will be fairly disappointed, and maybe even a goodly amount of sad, after watching this. Even if the movie had all the 'right stuff' to capture and keep the audience's attention, it still wouldn't have been a success. It was very hard for me to witness Keanu Reeves in his late 50's, acting melancholy and minus the spirit of his younger self. The same goes for Trinity. Everything that made Niobe who she truly was has been completely erased from her character now. Casting the new Morpheus lookalike only makes us long for the original one even more. Although it's supposed to be an action movie, the genre follows more along the lines of a romance. The original contained romance also, but the action greatly outweighed it. The movie had a good premise, but it lacked the depth of what they were trying to accomplish.
