    Absolutely atrocious
Imagine a film so bad, the idea of having to type out all the bad things that make it bad just takes the wind out of you. Where the neverending torrent of awfulness is just so deep and so wide that you find yourself trying to find a way to skirt the job, to not have to go through with it. I had to suffer through watching the film, now i have to suffer again typing the review.

And now imagine that to bring something THAT BAD to the screen, you needed Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Robert DeNiro, Anya Taylor-Joy, John Washington, Colleen Camp, Rami Malek, Mike Myers, and even Chris Rock and Taylor Swift!!

Amsterdam is the vaguely-inspired-by The Business Plot story of a doctor in Amsterdam, in the pre-war days. He discovers a murder and there's hints of a shadowy plot, but this shadowy plot is taking place *somewhere else* and nearly NONE of it is actually in the film.

The script is also bathed in quasi-nonsensical dialogue that contributes nothing to the story, leaving you with a runtime of 2 full hours and maybe at most 30 minutes of content. It's a thriller that understands nothing of what makes a thriller, even a barely competent one. There's scene after scene after scene of absolutely disgraceful incompetence in filmmaking, from the behaviour of the characters, to the redundant dialogue, to the vulgarly self-indulgence of the tedious plot. This was genuinely one of the worst things i have ever watched and i will remember it for the rest of my life.

My vote: 4/10 i'm being generous.

in the cycle of recurring ideas in the history of cinema
Amsterdam is a crime and comedy show that focuses on an important historical event. A film whose story is inspired by the story of a businessman's coup against the American President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934-1933. Amsterdam is one of those films that count on its stars and only hope for their attraction. From Robert De Niro to Margot Robbie, Taylor Swift, Christian Bale, and David Washington, everyone is in this movie, and Walt Disney has sent a low-key script through them to their platform. A film that is confusing because of its many ideas and the audience does not know exactly what to look for.

Amsterdam is a disappointing place as we will find out, the director is waiting for us at the end of the film with a slogan and a very thematic idea. The film spends a lot of time and tediously proceeds to reveal a fascist conspiracy in the final moments. In American works there is a warning with this theme, "America is in danger". In this film too, Amsterdam shows that democracy in America is endangered by other countries. This approach is a common interest among American film companies to show their country always under threat.

Badly wanted to love this film but ...
Loved the cast, the costumes and the ambition but something wasn't quite working for me. The characterisations bordered on the surreal and the sequence of events was hard to follow. I also struggled to place exactly when some of the 'between the wars' scenes were being set

However, the make up used to represent the horrors of the Great War was brilliantly done (right down to the glass eye of the main protagonist played by Christian Bale) and the artworks done by Margot Robbie as Valerie Voze had a period authenticity.

All things considered, I'm glad to have seen it. Elements of the film will stick with me and i will definitely discuss it with film fanatic friends.

    I Can't Stop Smiling!
I've just finished watching this film and I'm feeling great. I have a big smile on my face and I'm refreshed and tingling all over. Coincidentally, the last movie that made me feel this way was "The Suicide Squad" that also starred Margot Robbie.

Am I in love with Margot Robbie? Possibly. For me she's the Raquel Welch of this generation, although she is a far more talented actress. But that has little to do with my review.

This was one ambitious, star-studded movie with a message that parallels the perilous politics of the U. S. and the world today. Did the filmmakers fulfill their ambitions? No! They fell a little short. But I'm very thankful for their attempt.

I think the plethora of stars in the cast was a distraction in light of the lack of meaty and memorable roles for them. I'm a war movie buff and two star studded movies that come to mind are "The Longest Day" and "Apocolypse Now."

Decades later I clearly remember the moments and lines of the likes of John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Red Buttons, and Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, and Dennis Hopper. Of the secondary stars of "Amsterdam," I won't remember them or their lines, but I will certainly remember Taylor Swift getting thrown under a bus (car actually) early in the movie. That's about it. A waste of star power in the film, but maybe not in boosting ticket sales.

I think the primary stars did very well with what they had to work with. You know how I feel about Robbie, and I think this was the best I've seen of John David Washington. You could say the same for Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek, and Andrea Riseborough too.

That brings me to Christian Bale. He was marvelous. But was he intentionally channeling Peter Falk's detective Columbo for his character? Was it me? Joke on us. I dunno. It worked.

Finally, Robert De Niro is one of my all-time favorite actors. But in my opinion, his acting has not aged well. In its stead is his political activism and that amongst other things may be the reason for some of the lower reviews. I gave the film a solid seven stars. The filmmakers shot for the stars but landed on the moon, and that's pretty good.

Weird, disjointed, a waste of incredible talent.
I tried to like this movie. With such a star studded cast you'd expect something incredible, instead we get a weird set of caricatures in a strange dance for 2 hours of mind numbing irritation. The meld of great actors is accompanied by a stilted script and a jump from plot line to plot line peppered with bizarre uncomfortable moments. The cinematography varied from interesting tracking shots to confusing stage-like framing. An hour in, there's still no hope of a well thought out scene or something to tie the plot together in a cohesive way. Overall, I would really love the two hours of my life back.

Hypocrisy of De Niro playing a decorated war hero
A star studded cast with too much monologue and twisted time lines. Unfortunately the film is tainted by having Robert De Niro, who publicly and loudly espoused the overthrow of a sitting U. S. President, play a decorated war hero determined to protect not only the U. S. Constitution but to support and defend the men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force and Coast Guard. He is a fascist who threatened to do bodily harm to a sitting President but was never held to account for those acts. Where is justice in this country when a socialist/communist can be allowed to benefit from this country all the while trying to destroy it. As a veteran I am sickened to see this man living in this great nation.

A curious and fascinating detective story, with a stellar cast and wonderful photography.
"Amsterdam" was a pleasant surprise. Surprisingly with such a cast I heard about it just at the beginning of December. I have personally enjoyed it, especially if you like slow-paced cinema. The film takes his time to develop the characters and it gives a proper background for every single one of them. We understand the story of these people, what they had to endure and what their purposes and objectives are; therefore the audience can create a bond with them. This is a well written movie and I have appreciated the direction of David Russel: despite the serious topics treated, the general tone is light and at times comedic, an interesting cacophony that worked greatly, at least for me. The plot is intriguing, it pushed me to keep watching as I wanted to see the mystery finally resolved. Almost two hours and a half flew away, I have never felt bored in any way and the actors were phenomenal. Christian Bale and Margot Robbie really nailed it.

From a technical perspective "Amsterdam" is very well done, I liked the colors, and there are some shots that are just beautiful. The director perfectly showed the different expressions of the different characters with many close-ups and overall he captured a lot of small details that revealed to be essential for the story itself. The photography is very clean, creative and extremely professional. It is beautiful to see so many great names united to create a movie that is clearly directed to a certain kind of audience, and I am glad that actors with a certain fame, decided to be part of these "alternative" projects. We also need films like this.

    confusing, boring and exhausting
When you wait for something to happen or to make sense and 45 minutes went by, you give up. I turned it off after 50 minutes, there was no plot, no build-up, nothing to enjoy. Maybe the script was a total mess, it's hard to screw up so badly with actors and actresses so good.

To meet the review char requirement, I have to go on, but there is no reason to. I said everything that was worth saying. There are two guys running around, time lapses, war, fights, falling in love, too many events and hooks, please ignore my second paragraph. I have no idea who benefits from x characters. It's not a commercial.

    This goes to the favorites
Great tempo all the way, that flourish with various moments of crime, comedy, friendship & love.

The amazing cast of actors gave their own unique style of characters with such witty and intelligent conversations. They were full of heart, emotions, spontanity and personality while still giving it natural performance that didnt feel overdone. The pair of three especially made it geniune of their friendship. I hope they enjoyed making the movie, because it sure looks like they had.

Furthermore, Christian Bale gave an excellent voice narrative, while his character provided tempo and drama resulted it with an extra height of the production.

Last, the cinematography and editing is creative and immersive, it shows you unique angles of compositions that are pleasing, interesting and enhancing to look at.

I will look forward to pull this up now and then. A classic.
