damianphelps - 2 May 2024 Impressively Deep If You Want It To Be Lightyear easily met my very low expectations for this movie and then some.
Visually the movie is beautiful, the animation is dark and matches some of the heavier tones of the film.
The actual story, yes it does have one, was surprisingly deep and well considered. Often its glossed over to keep it interesting for the kids but there is enough meat on the bone to keep most adults a little more than intrigued.
This makes LIghtyear one of the better animated efforts over the last 20 years as it blends adult thoughts, concerns, fears and the like with funny giggling moments for the young'ens.
Lightyear has a little something :)
stevenschultz-80475 - 4 January 2024 False advertising As a Toy Story and Chris Evans fan, I was highly disappointed by this "film."
This movie was billed as "the movie that made Andy (and every other boy in 1995) fall in love with Buzz Light-year."
This is false. This movie is so soaking in modernism that it was hard to take seriously. There were many opportunities for mods that were completely missed.
The key takeaway that there was no effort made was that there was a random weapon that Buzz did not have in Toy Story, while his laser was practically written off as a joke or something. There is no way any children would idolize Buzz Light-year after watching this half-***ed farce.
snoozejonc - 30 October 2023 Disappointing by Pixar standards but has good standout moments I think Lightyear starts very well and I was engaged with the time-bending sci-fi premise and character arcs. It had a good pace, clever concept, and hit some strong emotional moments. This continues for me until the point where the test flights stop and three new characters are introduced.
From there the plot shifts into a different type of adventure and focuses on the banter between Buzz and these characters. Unfortunately, for me the humour falls flat, the characters do not engage me and I soon start to feel the length of the film to the point where I wish it to be over. I think the the comedy is mostly weak throughout the movie, but I appreciate this depends on your sense of humour.
I think it picks up slightly towards the end and resolves in a satisfying way, particularly with the reveal involving a certain antagonist, but for a movie that built up great momentum initially, it comes off the rails too easily in the middle and never truly recovers.
Visually it is as awesome as you would expect from Pixar and the animators as always deserve a tremendous amount of credit.
There is nothing wrong with Chris Evans' voice performance, but I think the decision to change from Tim Allen made no improvement to the role. The stated reason for it saying audiences would be confused between the toy and non-Toy version sounds like a quite patronising excuse.
For me it's a 5.5/10, but I round upwards.
connorpiper-41945 - 31 December 2022 A well done movie, but maybe about the wrong hero I think that this film is actually very good, and I highly recommend for someone just wanting something to watch with kids or by themselves. I found this movie (As as 23 yo college student) super entertaining and I think that Pixar went a bit out of their comfort zone with this one. They experimented with a more overarching Sci-Fi theme, but that is where my issue with the film comes in. They bullhorn in Buzz somewhere where I am not sure he fits, alongside with a group of misfits so that we can have a moral to teach. I know that Pixar has to have that so their movies do serve a greater purpose in Children's lives, and I wholeheartedly agree with a simple message like this movie has. But the script just cannot take it.
In the end it still is excellent, and I recommend it.
korrson - 7 December 2022 Not the buzz Lightyear from toy story. Well, I didn't expect much because of the reviews.
That's always the best best way to enjoy a mediocre movie.
Beautiful to behold but kids didn't enjoy.
Rousing music to make you cheer.
What was missing here I don't know. It's a nice extension of the buzz story. But this has nothing to do with toy story which disappointed the kids.
Disney is just out of touch with reality right now pandering to the diverse leftest cannon trying to indoctrinate kids instead of entertaining them.
Free with Disney+ but I wouldn't have paid to see this. They brought back the new CEO so I'm hoping he can turn things back around.
They told me I have enough characters and then I didn't. I think they're trying to suppress so so reviews.
peterlindberg_88 - 15 November 2022 This should have a higher rating score! I was actually pleasantly surprised about this movie - I liked it! It wasn't Toy Story good, but it was a good movie. I really liked the relationship between Buzz and Alicha. And I really liked the cat robot Sox! He was one of the best things in the movie.
The plot was fine. The antagonist Zurg was fine. The characters and dialogue was fine. Overall, it wasn't a great movie, it was a good movie. I think 6/10 is too low. I think it should be around 7-8/10.
I'm actually happy that they decided to give Buzz an origin story. And it fits perfectly into the Toy Story movies. Is there a need for a follow-up movie with Buzz? Not really.
ftgplus4 - 24 October 2022 Deserved its disappointing box office performance, but didn't have to At the beginning of "Lightyear," we're told that it's supposed to be the favorite movie of Andy from 1995's TOY STORY. But it is not at all believable as such, mainly because it is such a totally 2022 film (in more ways than one).
Overall, it's a reasonably engaging animated tale, with some more or less clever twists. My main issue with the basic plot is that it relies on the tired old trope of "incompetent motley crew pulls together and becomes great."
The most serious problem, though, is one that could have very easily been avoided. The filmmakers have made one controversial, "politically correct" choice, which is all the worse because it makes no sense in its context. A whole bunch of problems -- messing up a plot point, potentially confusing the kiddos, offending concerned parents, making people not want to see the film -- could have been avoided simply by having one minor, non-speaking character be a guy rather than a gal.
Sorry, Pixar, but if you were disappointed in the box office performance, it's your own fault for making a choice that alienated so much of your potential audience.
