Hard to invest in the characters
It's hard to pinpoint why this isn't a better film. It has all the elements, well paced, beautifully made, exciting, gory and some original elements but it all comes together to fall very short of Dawn of the Dead (2004) and the original Romero trilogy. It even falls short of Land of the Dead (2005) which it actually feels quite similar to. Thankfully it is vastly better than the latter Romero of the dead films. So it starts with a really good opening scene, beautiful and engaging, so beautiful. The ending is also excellent. The production quality is incredibly high with great music, cinematography, effects and sound design. So what is wrong with this film? For me the biggest issue was the lead character and the casting choice. I get that he had to be big for the story but he's the character and the way he's played is so uncharismatic and unengaging that you're not invested in their plight, the lead character should do the opposite. None of the characters are nice people so I didn't find myself engaged in their survival. Sometimes the film is a little boring and I think that's because it is a bit pretentious like the director didn't want to make another zombie film. I appreciate how they tried to expand zombie lore but ultimately I didn't like the expansion, it should be about the people and not the zombies evolving. Overall it's hard to say exactly why I didn't like this more, it has some great elements and ideas but it falls flatter than it should because it doesn't have a soul.

    Not Much Here
Despite the reports that this movie wasn't any good, I went into this with an open mind and some moderately high hopes considering how well Zak Snyder had done with his remake of Dawn of the Dead.

It's not a sequel to Dawn of the Dead. It's a casino heist movie with zombies, so the best you can call it is sloppy seconds. Las Vegas is overrun by the undead, and Dave Bautista and his assembled team are hired to go into the zombie controlled no man's land to crack a safe and bring back millions before the site gets cauterized with a nuke.

Bautista cuts an imposing physical presence on screen but lacks all the other attributes that made Arnold Schwarzenegger excel in action movies. They could've gotten more out of Jesse Ventura if they needed a wrestler for this. Considering it's a Vegas bank heist movie, I would have even preferred Sammy Davis Jr.

You get some non-standard zombie action in this one too. In addition to the usual mindless meat eaters, there's also a race of intelligent zombies with the zombie king and queen even engaging in some zombie romance. We actually didn't need that.

The overall cast was the most depressing thing about this movie. It's got the typical postomodern team of mercenaries, but these people are so lacking in personality that you won't really care what happens to them. The thing is so cliched you already know who's going to make it out and who won't. Honestly, we did this better in the 1940s war movies where the platoon always had a Ward Bond type as the sergeant, Harry Caray as the blond kid and that wise cracking Italian kid from Brooklyn. It's been 75 years since those types of movies, and we still can't improve on those characterizations?

    Really fun, but weak story.
I do like the idea of the characters doing the heist in a quarantined city with zombies in it, but the execution isn't that good. There's a couple of interesting ideas in it like how there's different types of zombies and how some of them acts like tribal members. And I like how Zeus is like the tribal leader of the group of zombies. Also the movie is entertaining with its action scenes it presented here and is very suspenseful throughout.

Unfortunately the movie is really predictable with knowing that the mission won't not goes as planned and the results on what happened. Also I wish there was more character development in the movie since some of them are pretty interesting. Also there was a minor side plot about Kate looking for Geeta in the city, but that goes nowhere interesting and is completely worthless at the end.

    Enjoyable zombie romp
A sequel (in part) to Army of Thieves. I read some reviews of this after watching AOT but watched this anyway and enjoyed it - it's a solid 7/10. There's some decent effects, perfomances and storyline and is different to the usual zombiekillfest. Worth a watch.

Hoooo Boy This Is Not Good
I loved Army of Thieves. This is terrible. The plot is beyond ridiculous even for the genre. Gaping plot holes. The wonderful Playfulness of the 'Thieves' is missing and our favourite safe cracker is criminally underused.

It's has some small flashes of excitement but on the whole it's just dreadful. Such a shame.
